Hi Global Recap readers,

Fitting meme
Over the weekend, President Trump escalated his rhetoric, threatening a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a little over five hours, we’ll find out whether this is another “TACO” fakeout, or the trigger for an oil spike and a market dump.
Wild times. ⏱️
🇭🇺 HUNGARY
Orbán Lost After
16 Years in Power

President of the Tisza Party, Péter Magyar (left), and President of the Fidesz party and outgoing Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán (right).
Orbán conceded after early results turned ugly.
Péter Magyar's Tisza party is headed for 138 of 199 seats (a two-thirds majority).
Magyar says he'll go after corruption and pull Hungary closer to the EU.
Turnout hit roughly 79%.
Hilary Clinton is drawing criticism after declaring "victory" against "Viktor Orbán’s autocratic regime."
But Clinton’s critics say that framing falls apart fast: if Orbán really were an “autocrat,” why did he concede through a democratic process?
Orbán’s loss undercuts Trump’s influence in the EU, especially with Vice President Vance having just gone to Hungary last week to support him.
🇷🇺🇺🇦 RUSSIA & UKRAINE
Easter Truce Breaks Down

Russian President, Vladimir Putin (left), and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy (right).
Just as expected, the Easter ceasefire barely lasted a day, despite the planned 32-hour window starting Saturday.
Russia said Ukraine broke it 1,971 times overnight.
Ukraine said Russia racked up 7,696 violations by late Sunday.
Ukrainian officials said civilians were hurt in drone strikes in Kharkiv region.
Russian officials in Kursk and Belgorod said Ukrainian attacks injured civilians and killed two people in Belgorod.
🇨🇳🇹🇼 CHINA & TAIWAN
Beijing Courts Taiwan Opposition

Kuomintang (KMT) leader Cheng Li-wun leaving a news conference in Beijing on Friday.
Beijing rolled out "goodwill steps" after Xi met the leader of Taiwan's opposition party (KMT) Cheng Li-wun.
China said it would:
make it easier to sell Taiwan farm and fishery products into the mainland,
encourage Taiwanese investment there, and
restart some outbound travel to the island.
It also floated a regular communication channel with the KMT.
President Lai Ching-te's government says any cross-strait political talks need official authorization, even if Taiwan stays open to exchanges.
🇮🇷🇺🇸 IRAN & USA
Hormuz Deadline Hit
Talks. The 21-hour "peace talks," mediated by Pakistan, ran from Saturday into early Sunday. Iran reportedly would not take the nuclear limits Washington wanted, and Washington would not move without them.
Perspectives
🇺🇸 According to President Trump:
Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz, but failed.
Iran agreed to "most points," but they were unwilling to give up nuclear ambitions.
🇮🇷 According to Foreign Minister Araghchi:
Iran entered the negotiations in good faith.
But when the sides were reportedly inches away from a deal, the US shifted to a maximalist position and blew up the agreement.
The Order

Order. Trump then put a clock on it: Monday at 10:00 am. Eastern Time (1400 GMT).
The US military said ships entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas would be blocked.
Traffic through Hormuz to non-Iranian ports are still expected to pass without intervention.
Note: Some people are speculating that Trump could “TACO” again, especially since the blockade is set to kick off just 30 minutes after the market opens. We’ll see.
Speculations
Vance. There’s speculation the Islamabad meeting wasn’t meant to succeed—just to play out a predetermined failure.
JD Vance's presence matters especially because he has been one of the anti-war voices inside the Trump administration.
So sending him lets the White House tell anti-war MAGA, and maybe Vance's own camp too, that diplomacy got a real run before force took over.

Empty supertankers reportedly heading toward the Gulf of America/Mexico. According to oil market researcher Rory Johnston, all the tankers shown on the map are “empty VLCCs (~2 million barrel capacity each) currently heading for the US Gulf Coast.”
Energy. You might remember that all through March, Trump was warning allies that if they did not help the US secure Hormuz, he would “remember” who failed to step up. Many took this as a warning that Washington would eventually make those countries feel the consequences.
Now Trump supporters are connecting the dots:
the US secured Venezuelan oil before the Iran conflict
the blockade is now underway, and
they think Washington may be preparing to make unhelpful countries pay for sitting this one out.
📌 Context. Big tankers are already rerouting to the US for oil—avoiding Hormuz altogether. Trump supporters believe this was part of Trump's plan to make the world dependent on US energy exports.

Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin (of all people) is now offering to mediate a peace deal between the US and Iran.
The likely motive is not complicated: Russia benefits from higher oil prices and has no reason to like the USA gaining even more leverage over one of the world's key oil chokepoints.
