North Korea
Russia Hacked by North Korea

🇰🇵 North Korea is known for its nuclear ambitions and its missile program. President Trump famously called him the “rocket man.” But it also has a secret weapon that could give it an edge over its enemies: hacking.

📰 As reported by Reuters, North Korean cyber agents infiltrated the systems of a prominent Russian missile manufacturer, NPO Mashinostroyeniya - potentially extracting intelligence and technology.

Why would North Korea do this? NPO Mashinostroyeniya is a pioneer developer of hypersonic missiles and ballistic missiles. We can only speculate on the exact reason, but it seems like North Korea was seeking critical info on these weapons.

👨‍💻 The hackers belonged to two groups linked to the North Korean government.

  • ScarCruft: a cyber-espionage team that operates under the Ministry of State Security, North Korea’s intelligence agency.

  • Lazarus: a hacking group that is part of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea’s military intelligence service.

The exact way they broke in is unknown. However, experts believe hackers used social engineering to infect targets with malware. This all started in late 2021 and continued until May 2022, when the company's tech experts spotted and stopped the hackers.
