Canada’s Hypocrisy?
Hi Global Recap readers,
We have a rather long story about news coming from Canada.
Many news platforms are using words like “Islamophobia” to describe the incident, but we are digging into what many online are saying about it: hypocrisy.
Since the issue is contentious, we have a live poll for it too.
But first: Let’s talk about China’s recent violent action against the Philippines. 👇
🇵🇭 Philippines
China Uses Axes
The Philippines has leveled serious accusations against China’s Coast Guard, claiming a violent encounter involving bladed weapons during a South China Sea skirmish.
🔘 Aggression: The recent altercation near the Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed Spratly Islands escalated tensions significantly.
The Philippine military’s footage shows Chinese officers wielding knives and axes, damaging Filipino boats. Manila deemed the action a "brazen act of aggression."
The clash occurred during a Philippine resupply mission to its soldiers on a beached WWII-era warship, asserting Manila’s territorial claims.
China’s actions are described as “pirate-like,” with reports of looting and destruction of equipment and personal belongings of Filipino personnel.
🔘 Consequences: This incident could have major repercussions, potentially involving the United States due to a longstanding mutual defense treaty with the Philippines.
“United States stands with its ally the Philippines and condemns the escalatory and irresponsible actions.”

🇨🇦 Canada
Toronto’s Double Standards?
🔘 Investigation: Toronto Police are probing into an electronic billboard van displaying messages perceived as Islamophobic. The van, linked to Rebel News, showed videos suggesting Canada is “under siege” by Muslim protesters.
The advertisement presents a scene that seems to take place in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, where hundreds of Muslims are seen engaged in prayer. This event stirred controversy due to the use of a public space for a specific religious activity, and the perceived preferential treatment towards Muslims.
The police chief labeled it “hateful,” and Mayor Olivia Chow called it a "vile and Islamophobic act."
A reward of up to $25,000 is offered for information leading to the arrest of those behind the campaign.
"This public campaign is pure Islamophobia and hate.”
🔘 Response: The owner of Rebel News, Ezra Levant, claimed the ads were by “Canadians Opposed to the Occupation of our Streets and Campuses,” an anonymous group fearing retaliation.
Levant argues that the ads show “actual footage” of events in Toronto and that charging him could be a threat to free speech.

🔘 Double Standards: Rightfully so, people online are criticizing the Toronto Police Service (TPS) and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow for hypocrisy - accusing them of ignoring previous pro-Hamas protests and adverts, while swiftly acting on this incident.
🔘 Concerns: Although the message conveyed in the above video does not reflect the views of all Muslims in Canada, it does show what many Canadians are afraid of.
To simply disregard all forms of fear of Islam as “bigotry” is degrading.
Even if it is the minority, the presence of individuals with such extreme views can still be a cause for worry among the population.
🔘 Counter-Argument: However, there are individuals who argue that the so-called “anti-zionism” advertisements were not expressing hatred towards a race or ethnicity. Their main arguments are:
The phrase “From the river to the sea” is peaceful.
Opposing “Zionism” does not equate to harboring hatred against Jews.

🇰🇷 South Korea
Another Crossing, Another Firing

🔘 Diplomatic Rift: South Korea’s not happy with Russia cozying up to North Korea. They’ve summoned the Russian ambassador to voice their displeasure over a defense pact.
The pact, signed by Putin and Kim Jong Un, promises mutual defense if either country is attacked.
South Korea’s response? They’re considering arming Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
🔘 Border Crossing: But that’s not all. On Thursday, South Korea fired warning shots at the soldiers for the third time this month.
These brief excursions are thought to be “accidental” but what are they?
Testing the waters? Or are these genuinely accidents?
But what’s certain is that North Korea is beefing up its border defenses. They’re digging in, quite literally, with anti-tank barriers and mines. The goal? Keep their people from heading south.

🇺🇦🇲🇩 Ukraine & Moldova
EU Membership Talks

🔘 Gratitude: Ukraine and Moldova are set to start EU accession talks on Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude, saying, "Millions of Ukrainians, and indeed generations of our people, are realizing their European dream."
This marks a significant moment for Ukraine, symbolizing its return to the European community after centuries.
🔘 Path to Peace: Moldovan President Maia Sandu also views EU membership as a route to stability and growth.
She believes that “becoming an EU member is our path to peace, prosperity, and a better life for all citizens.”
The talks in Luxembourg represent a crucial step towards the long and challenging journey of EU integration.
🔘 Diplomatic Push: The EU’s decision to initiate talks follows the fulfillment of requirements by both countries.
The requirements include the implementation of reforms to fight corruption and support minority rights.
EU diplomats have been advocating for the commencement of negotiations before Hungary assumes the Council of the EU presidency.
