North Korea
Kim’s Rocket Fizzles Out

🚀 North Korea’s satellite launch fails again. Kim Jong Un’s latest attempt to launch a spy satellite into orbit ended in a spectacular failure, as the rocket malfunctioned and broke into pieces. This was the second time North Korea tried and failed to send a satellite into space, after their first flop in May.

🌊 Splashdown for rocket debris. The rocket parts fell into the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean, creating a mess for the neighboring countries. South Korea recovered some of the debris and said the satellite was too primitive to work anyway.

🚨 Japan tells Okinawa to run. The launch triggered an emergency evacuation call for the residents of Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost region. The call was later lifted, but Japan was furious with North Korea for launching a rocket that used ballistic missile technology.

🌎 World says no to North Korea. Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. all condemned the launch as a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions that ban North Korea from using ballistic missile technology. But this is North Korea we are talking about. Forget about getting it to listen.

😮‍💨 Why it matters. This failed launch is important because it shows that North Korea is still pursuing its nuclear and missile ambitions, despite international sanctions and pressure. But with this kind of track record, maybe the U.S. can breathe a sigh of relief.
