No Peace for Gaza
Hi Global Recap readers,
For those who were holding their breath for a possible ceasefire in Gaza, you can breathe again now.
I am sorry to disappoint: but it seems like Netanyahu isn’t having it.
With the election fast approaching, Biden must also be feeling the heat. I can almost hear Biden throwing the F-bombs again.

🇮🇱 No Peace for Gaza

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ terms for a ceasefire on Wednesday, vowing to continue the war in Gaza until achieving "absolute victory."
Rejection: The talks hit a dead end after Hamas demanded the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, among other conditions.
Casualties: Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu labeled Hamas’ proposal “delusional.”
Mediation: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he will work “relentlessly” to reach a deal, despite Hamas’ proposal containing "clear non-starters."

🇷🇺 Putin’s Rival Disqualified

Boris Nadezhdin
Boris Nadezhdin, a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, has been banned from running in Russia’s presidential election next month.
The Central Election Committee (CEC) of Russia rejected his candidacy, claiming he failed to collect enough valid signatures.
Petition: Nadezhdin submitted 105,000 signatures, but the CEC only accepted 95,587 of them, falling short of the 100,000 threshold.
Opposition: Nadezhdin is a former lawmaker and leader of the anti-war movement, who opposes Putin’s aggression and corruption.
Clearance: The CEC’s decision leaves Putin with no serious challengers, as most of his opponents have been jailed, exiled, or silenced.

🇩🇪 Germany Joins Red Sea

The German navy frigate “Hessen” is on its way to the Red Sea to join a planned EU mission to safeguard shipping routes from Houthi attacks.
Mission: Dubbed Operation Aspides, European warships and airborne systems will be deployed to shield cargo ships from the Yemen-based, Iran-backed rebels.
Motivation: The Red Sea and the Suez Canal are vital trade routes for Europe and Germany, as more than 90% of all goods reach them by sea.
Response: The US, UK, and other Western allies have conducted airstrikes against Houthi targets in recent weeks, while the EU has decided to move forward with its military mission.
Is this the beginning of another world-wide conflict?

🇺🇦 Ukraine Shakes Up Leadership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (left) and Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi (right)
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy fired his top army general on Thursday amid a stalemate in the war with Russia. The move is seen as a major overhaul of the country’s military strategy as it faces shortages of ammunition and personnel.
Replacement: Zelenskyy appointed Col. Gen. Syrskyi, a pro-NATO commander, to lead the army.
Tension: Zelenskyy and the ousted general, Zaluzhnyi, had clashed over the failed summer counteroffensive and the mobilization plan.

Brazil’s Coup Investigation

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro
🕵️♂️ Bolsonaro’s Allies in the Spotlight. On Thursday, Brazil’s federal police have launched an operation targeting some of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s top aides.
This operation is part of an investigation into an alleged coup attempt following Bolsonaro’s election defeat in 2022.
Signaling more future arrests, the federal police demanded Bolsonaro hand over his passport.
🎯 Who’s Being Targeted? The individuals under scrutiny include:
General Walter Braga Netto, former vice-presidential candidate in Bolsonaro’s campaign,
Augusto Heleno, Bolsonaro’s former national security adviser, and
Former Justice Minister Anderson Torres.
🖐️ Supporters. Bolsonaro’s allies were not the only ones causing trouble. His loyal supporters also attacked and damaged government offices in Jan. 2023, calling for the army to seize power, after he lost the vote.
🏛️ His Son Too. Bolsonaro’s presidency has been marred by controversy. In the past, his son Carlos Bolsonaro was also targeted by federal police as part of a probe into suspected illegal spying on political foes during his father’s term.
