Hi Global Recap readers,

47% of the voters thought Trump’s Pearl Harbor joke was “weird and disrespectful.”

Thank you for all the comments on yesterday’s poll.

  • The people who picked “Harmless joke, fair point” were basically saying, “if Takaichi doesn’t seem to care, why is everyone else getting offended on her behalf? Besides he made an accurate point.”

  • Many who picked “I have other thoughts” seemed to land on the same basic take: “it was kind of weird, but not that big of a deal.”

  • Surprisingly, Bill Maher echoed that sentiment too, saying it may have been weird, but if a comedian like Shane Gillis had said it, people probably would’ve laughed.

  • At the same time, plenty of people feel that kind of joke is beneath the office of the President of the United States.

  • It also seemed like some were going to dislike it no matter what, because they just don’t like Trump, period.

As always, thank you again for your unfiltered opinions (and tinfoils 😬).

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES
More Marines Deployed

US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth.

TLDR:
^ The Pentagon is sending 2,500 more Marines to the Middle East.
^ They were deployed from the West Coast on Wednesday, on three warships tied to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
^ The idea is to relieve Marines rushed in from Japan last week.
^ Trump still says no boots on the ground in Iran, at least for now.

Details

Shift. The new deployment centers on the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton, California, plus the USS Boxer amphibious ready group. Military officials said the force is heading to the Middle East.

Swap. These Marines are expected to replace a unit sent quickly from Japan last week as the war with Iran kept expanding and retaliatory strikes largely closed the Strait of Hormuz.

US President, Donald Trump.

Room. Trump said on March 19, 2026 that he had no plans to send American troops onto Iranian soil. He also added, "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you."

Use. Officials didn't say exactly how this force would be used.

  • Offensive? Many are pointing out that Marine expeditionary units exist for exactly the kind of fast, limited ground missions that leave presidents wiggle room.

  • Defensive? They did note these units can put infantry Marines and vehicles on the ground fast, and can also help evacuate American citizens if things get worse.

Scale. One official said the Japan-based Marines were supposed to head home after a few weeks, but defense leaders could also keep both units in the region. That would add to an American military presence already above 50,000 troops.

🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM
Iranian Tried
Entering Nuclear Base

HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane.

TLDR:
^ Two people tried to get into the UK's nuclear submarine base.
^ Police say they were refused entry, then quickly arrested.
^ The man was Iranian, and the woman's nationality is unknown.
^ The navy says they didn't force their way in.

Details

Attempt. A 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old woman tried to enter HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane near Helensburgh on Thursday at about 5 pm. Police said the woman is not believed to be Iranian.

Arrest. Police Scotland said they asked if they could enter, were refused, and were arrested shortly after. The Royal Navy said they did not try to force their way in and wouldn't say more while the case is being investigated.

Base. This is one of the most sensitive military sites in the UK.

  • Faslane is where the Royal Navy keeps all of its nuclear submarines, including the four Vanguard-class boats that carry Trident missiles.

  • It's also been a protest site for decades, with an anti-nuclear peace camp outside the base since 1982.

🇺🇳 UNITED NATIONS
Guterres Draws A Line

Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.

TLDR:
^ UN chief Antonio Guterres says he's working with Trump's Board of Peace in Gaza.
^ That's mostly about reconstruction, homes, and basic infrastructure.
^ Beyond that, he called the board Trump's personal project.
^ He said it's not a serious way to handle major crises.
^ On Hormuz, he'd rather work through the UN with the US and other states.

Details

Gaza. Guterres said the UN is "cooperating actively" with structures created by Trump's Board of Peace when it comes to rebuilding Gaza. He framed that as practical work on a reconstruction plan the UN Security Council had already approved.

Board. Then came his boundary. He said everything beyond Gaza reconstruction is a personal project of Trump.

  • He said that the Board is an ineffective way to deal with the world's current crises.

  • He also argued that any real peace effort has to stay anchored in "international law" and the UN charter.

Critique. On the flip side, many Trump supporters do not see the UN and “international law” as largely ineffective.

  • Many see it as a bloated, ineffective mess run by corrupt globalists with no real moral credibility.

  • Additionally, like we’ve seen over the past few years, “international law” and UN court rulings only matter as much as member states are actually willing to enforce them. For example, when the International Court of Justice ordered Russia to suspend its invasion of Ukraine, there was no mechanism to actually compel compliance.

  • For people who feel that way, the Board of Peace might come off as an alternative that could actually get things done without being dragged down by bureaucracy, corruption, and endless institutional dead weight.

📌 Context. Trump’s Board of Peace launched in January 2026, and was pitched as an alternative to the usual international institutions.

  • It’s asks member states to chip in $1 billion for permanent membership.

  • However, it hasn’t been able to bring in several major democracies, and so far both Russia and China have stayed on the sidelines.

  • That matters because Guterres is basically signaling that the UN will cooperate where the group is useful on Gaza, but he clearly does not view it as any kind of serious replacement for the UN.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES
Iran Oil Sanctions: Paused

US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent.

TLDR:
^ Washington eased sanctions on Iranian oil already at sea.
^ The waiver lasts 30 days, through April 19.
^ Treasury Secretary Bessent says 140 million barrels could hit the market.
^ Critics say that still risks sending money to Tehran.
^ The administration says it only covers oil already in transit.

Details

Move. The Trump administration issued a 30 day waiver for Iranian crude oil and petroleum products that were already loaded onto ships by March 20. The license runs from March 20 to April 19.

Pitch. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said the goal is to get more oil onto the market fast and ease supply pressure tied to the US-Israeli war on Iran. He said the waiver could bring about 140 million barrels to global markets.

Catch. Critics pointed out the obvious problem. If Iran is allowed to sell that oil, some of the money could still help fund its war effort.

  • Bessent pushed back and said the waiver is temporary and narrow.

  • He said it does not allow new purchases or new production, and that Iran would have a hard time accessing any revenue.

Pattern. This is the third temporary sanctions waiver in about two weeks. The US had already eased sanctions on Russian oil, so this is starting to look like a broader effort to trade sanctions pressure for more supply.
