Elon vs Ukraine (again)

Hi Global Recap readers,

Here we go again. Elon drops one meme and the internet splits like the Red Sea on steroids. Wait to read about this one.

(I also need what you think about this story)

🌐 Here’s what’s up around the world:

  • 🇲🇽 Mexico’s President Blasts US Aid and Sanctions.

  • 🏝️ Maldives Elects Pro-China Leader, India Loses Ground.

  • 🇰🇪 Kenya to Lead Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti.

  • 🚀 EU Backs Ukraine with Billions.

  • 🥁 Elon vs. Ukraine (again)

Let’s get into today’s news.

📈 Top News

🇲🇽 Mexico’s President Blasts US Aid and Sanctions. Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized US foreign policy, saying it causes more harm than good.

Why is he sounding the alarm? It looks like he wants US aid too.

He compared huge US aid packages for Ukraine with the lack of support for Latin America and the Caribbean. So it’s not about US spending too much money, but it’s about where the money is being sent. 🤔

US Secretary of State Blinken is set to meet with the Mexican president during his Oct. 4-5 trip to Mexico.

🏝️ Maldives Elects Pro-China Leader, India Loses Ground. The tiny island nation of Maldives has chosen a new president who wants to kick out Indian troops and get closer to China.

The election results are a blow to India’s influence and a boon to China’s ambitions in the Indian Ocean region.

A win for China?

🇰🇪 Kenya to Lead Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti. The UN Security Council has approved a resolution to send a multinational armed force to Haiti. The team will be Kenya, armed with a mission to restore security and stability in Haiti, which has been plagued by gang violence and political turmoil.

Haiti has not held elections since 2016 and its president was assassinated in 2021. Hopefully, the armed forces can help Haiti to hold the long-delayed elections.

The resolution was drafted by the US and Ecuador and received 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from China and Russia (of course).

🚀 EU Backs Ukraine with Billions. Just when it seemed like Ukraine was left high and dry, EU ministers swooped in, holding their first-ever off-site meeting in Kyiv in a show of unshakeable solidarity. They didn’t come empty-handed either - announcing a pledge of $5.25 billion for 2024.

Elon vs. Ukraine (again)

😂 Elon vs. Ukraine. Elon Musk finds himself on the news again. This time, he trolled the Ukrainian president with a meme, sparking outrage and a counter-meme.

🚀 What’s the Story? Elon Musk posted a meme on X mocking President Zelenskyy for him begging for US aid.

This is the meme:

🇺🇦 Ukraine Fights Back. Kyiv was quick to hit back at him, posting its own version of the meme with a picture of Musk:

Other Ukrainian officials and supporters also slammed Musk for his lack of empathy and accused him of siding with Putin.

Rightfully so, many are pointing to the fact that Elon himself received billions in subsidies from the US government.

Obviously, there are way too many responses to put here.

👍 But in summary, supporters of Elon say:

  • Ukraine is taking too much money from the US.

  • It’s free speech.

  • “It’s just a joke bro.”

👎 Critics of Elon say:

  • Backing Ukraine is essential to hold Putin accountable.

  • The meme’s insensitive to innocent Ukrainians getting raped and slaughtered.

  • “You got help from the government too.”
