China Erasing Israel?
Let’s get into today’s news.

💣 US Plans Mega-Nuke.

The US announced its plan to build a new nuclear bomb that is 24 times stronger than the ones that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Meanwhile, China is also known to be expanding its nuclear arsenal, raising the stakes for a possible showdown.
Is this the start of the new arms race?

🚨 Paris Train Station Shooting.

A veiled woman shouted “Allahu Akbar” and threatened to blow herself up on a train in Paris. Police shot her eight times, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. She had no explosives and a previous conviction for threatening soldiers.

🚑 Egypt Aids Gaza Victims.

Egypt is opening its border with Gaza on Wednesday to receive wounded Palestinians for medical treatment, amid the ongoing Israeli airstrikes that continue to kill many Gazans. A field hospital will also be built near the border to accommodate the injured.

🔫 Kadyrov Threatens to Shoot Protesters.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has ordered his security forces to shoot anyone who rallies against Israel’s actions in Gaza. This is a huge surprise from a Muslim-majority nation’s leader.
Is it a pro-Israel stance or just intolerance for chaos?
Likely, he’s just quelling unrest.

Israel
China Erasing Israel?

🗺️ What Israel? Online news mills are running hot on the claim that China’s online maps have “erased” the name of the Jewish state, sparking outrage and confusion.
But how much of this is true?
👀 Here’s Their Claim. Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Baidu have removed the name “Israel” from their online maps, despite displaying its internationally recognized borders. The maps also depict Palestinian territories, key cities, and the names of nearby countries including Cyprus, Jordan, and Iraq. Internet users in China noticed this change following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7.
🤷♂️ The Mystery. The pressing question here is whether this observation is recent or intentional. However, a Baidu spokesperson asserts that Israel’s omission was not intentional and that users can still locate it using the map’s search function.
🇨🇳 China’s Stance. However, it is understandable to jump to the conclusion that China had censored Israel’s name from the map amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Why? China has a history of advocating for the Palestinian cause and criticizing Israel’s actions.
China has also been a vocal supporter of a ceasefire and a two-state solution that envisions an independent Palestinian state coexisting with Israel.
In the weeks after the war broke out, China’s leaders called for an immediate end to the violence and humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people - while declining to explicitly call Hamas out on multiple occasions. Instead, Beijing vaguely insists that it is against all forms of attacks against civilians.
China’s foreign minister Wang Yi reportedly told an advisor to the Brazilian president:
"The crux of the matter is that justice has not been done to the Palestinian people."
This is parroting Turkish President Erdogan’s claim that Hamas militants are engaging in “jihad” to reclaim their “freedom.”
🎬 My Take. To be honest, when I first read about this, I initially thought that China actually “erased” Israel. Talk about huge news! However, upon further examination, the images I found of the map seem to omit Palestine’s name as well. If there aren’t any images that show Palestine’s name while not showing Israel’s, there’s one possible explanation: Israel and Palestine are simply too small to be shown in the zoomed-out view of the map. Just as street names vanish when zoomed out, so might Israel and Palestine due to their relatively small size.
However! This still doesn’t explain why Lebanon’s name is visible.
So what is it? Chinese censorship or just bad programming? |
