EU: Get ready "now

Hi Global Recap readers,
In our previous poll, many of you seemed to appreciate the government’s efforts to get people ready for a potential war or crisis. While some were still skeptical, questioning if this was a way to prep people before pushing for an actual war (rather than trying to prevent one), I think it’s wise to always be prepared for the worst-case scenario.
Just imagine the chaos if we weren’t…
That said, of course, it shouldn’t give any government the freedom to casually provoke situations or push buttons without reason. 😬
It seems many of you liked my take on Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, so here’s another relevant snippet from it that ties in perfectly with what we’re talking about:
“The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy’s not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.”
🇪🇺 EUROPE
EU Urges Stockpiling Supplies

The European Union is asking its citizens to stockpile supplies for at least 72 hours—yes, three days—because things are getting tense with Russia and global stability feels like it’s hanging by a thread.
Why Stockpile Now?
The EU Commission’s guidance highlights the need for a culture of “preparedness” and “resilience” across Europe.
Russia’s aggression and sabotage of critical infrastructure are key concerns.
Electronic warfare and geopolitical instability add to the urgency.
The first 72 hours of a crisis are deemed the most critical.
Practical Measures
It’s not just canned beans and bottled water (though, yes, those are a must). They’re talking about mental toughness and self-reliance too.
Schools may teach “preparedness” lessons to combat “fake news.”
It’s time for everyone to level up their survival skills.
Leadership’s Take
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of readiness.
She stated, “New realities require a new level of preparedness in Europe.”
Member states are urged to act swiftly to prevent and respond to crises.
Germany’s Example
Germany isn’t waiting around for the worst-case scenario. They’ve already updated their defense plans to tackle Russian aggression.
Last year, Germany revised its Framework Directive for Overall Defense.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stressed the importance of preparing for Russian aggression.

🇮🇱 ISRAEL
Hostage Crisis Escalates in Gaza

Palestinians chant anti-Hamas slogans demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas war, in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza Strip, on Wednesday.
Tensions are boiling over as Hamas threatens to return hostages “in coffins” if Israel continues its military operations in Gaza.
As reported yesterday, rare protests against Hamas rule have broken out in Gaza. Initially, they were confined to the northern part of the Strip, but today, they have spread further.
But how “real” is this?
Rocket Attacks and Retaliation
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad launched two rockets at southern Israel, one of which was intercepted by air defenses.
The IDF struck back, targeting a terror operative and multiple rocket launch sites.
Prime Minister Netanyahu warned of escalating measures, including seizing Gaza territory, if hostages aren’t released.
Footage of Israeli retaliation:
Hamas’s Grim Warning
Hamas responded with a statement claiming that Israeli airstrikes are putting the hostages' lives at risk.
They accused Israel of endangering captives with “random Zionist bombardment.”
Netanyahu countered, vowing to increase pressure on Hamas.
Protests Against Hamas
This latest development comes as rare protests have erupted in Gaza, with residents voicing their anger over Hamas’s rule.
Demonstrators in Gaza City and other areas burned tires and chanted “Hamas out.”
Protesters carried signs like “We refuse to die” and “Children in Palestine want to live.”
This clip is reportedly from a Southern town in Gaza:
Skepticism?
However, there are many online who are skeptical about this sudden show of bravery from Gazans.
Some suspect it was orchestrated by Israel or the US to pressure a halt to the war.
Others believe it’s a deception by Hamas itself.
🤔 Thoughts: Still, I don’t see why Hamas would take such a risk and damage its own reputation. If option 2 were true, what would they actually gain from it? Maybe they’re trying to end the war while making it look like they’re listening to public opinion—but I doubt it. If option 2 were true, though, that seems like the only possible explanation.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES
US Tightens Export Controls

US President Trump (left) and Chinese President Xi (right).
The US has added dozens of companies to its export control list, targeting Chinese firms accused of using American tech for military purposes.
China isn’t happy about it.
What’s the Deal?
The US Commerce Department has slapped export restrictions on roughly 80 companies, including over 50 based in China.
The list includes firms allegedly developing AI models and advanced chips for military use.
Six subsidiaries of Inspur Group, a major Chinese cloud computing provider, are among those targeted.
The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) has strongly objected, calling the decision “wrong” and “without factual basis.”
China’s Response
China isn’t taking this lightly. Its Foreign Ministry has fired back, accusing the US of abusing export controls to suppress Chinese enterprises.
Officials claim the move violates international law and disrupts global supply chains.
China has retaliated with countermeasures, including tariffs and investigations into American companies.
Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about tech—it’s part of a broader US-China trade war that’s been escalating for years.
The US aims to curb China’s ability to develop hypersonic weapons and other sensitive technologies.
Tariffs on Chinese goods have already hit 20%, with more hikes expected next week.
China has responded with its own duties and sanctions, including targeting Google in an anti-monopoly probe.
Why It Matters
These restrictions could have major implications for global tech and trade.
The “entity list” rule allows the US to control foreign-made products containing American tech.
This could disrupt supply chains and impact industries far beyond China.
The trade war shows no signs of cooling down, with both sides digging in for the long haul.

🇺🇦 UKRAINE
Ceasefire in Shambles Already

Ukraine’s officials are calling out Vladimir Putin for making a “mockery” of ceasefire talks, accusing him of being harder to deal with than a gangster.
Ceasefire Chaos
The latest ceasefire agreement in the Black Sea is already in shambles.
Russia launched a drone attack on Mykolaiv just hours after the deal was announced.
The Kremlin insists the deal won’t take effect until a sanctioned Russian bank is reconnected to the international payment system.
Europe says that won’t happen until Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s Warning
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is urging allies not to fall for Putin’s tricks.
He’s skeptical of the Kremlin’s intentions and warns against trusting their promises.
Zelenskyy says the US assured Kyiv the Black Sea deal was effective immediately.
Energy Truce Troubles
Both sides are accusing each other of violating a US-brokered truce on energy strikes.
The agreement aimed to “eliminate the use of force” in the Black Sea.
Emergency power outages hit Mykolaiv after seven drones were destroyed overnight.

🇱🇹 LITHUANIA
US Soldiers Lost in Training

Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte.
During a NATO military exercise in Lithuania, four US soldiers went missing and are now confirmed dead.
What Happened?
The soldiers went missing near the Belarusian border in an M88 recovery vehicle—essentially a massive, tank-like beast designed for tough rescues.
They were part of the 3rd Infantry Division, 1st Brigade, doing tactical drills.
The search, which involved helicopters and rescue crews, didn’t end the way anyone hoped.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Lithuanian and American forces worked around the clock to find the soldiers. Helicopters scoured the area, and Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene even visited the site to show support.
NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered the somber news from Warsaw, stating more details are still unclear.
Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, speaking on behalf of the US military, expressed his deep gratitude to Lithuanian responders.
Context
NATO forces are stationed in Lithuania to deter potential Russian aggression.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has been closely monitoring the situation.
