More Navalny Death Mysteries
Hi Global Recap readers,
Honestly, I tried to keep an open mind after reading about Navalny’s death.
Initial Thought: “Ahh, of course, Putin killed him.”
Second Thought: “But I might be biased. He could have just suddenly died. Not impossible.”
But with the latest update, I am leaning more toward my initial thought.
Sometimes, gut feeling is correct.

As if things couldn’t get more sus.
Navalny’s mother and widow were denied access to his body, while the authorities extended their investigation into his cause of death.
Maybe, they need to hide the real cause of his death, instead of the official “unknown” cause. Otherwise, why hide his body? 🤔
Context: Navalny “suddenly” died in a Russian prison last week, where he was serving a long sentence following years of persecution and poisoning.
Sanctions: Germany’s foreign minister said on Monday that she will propose new sanctions against Moscow over the death of Navalny.

Israel-Palestine
🇮🇱🇵🇸 Israel-Palestine Conundrum
On Saturday: Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv to demand early elections in hopes of ousting the current Israeli PM Netanyahu. But the PM dismissed the idea of it.
On Monday: Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki demanded an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The court is hearing arguments from over 50 states on the legal consequences of Israel’s actions in the occupied lands.
On Tuesday: The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. However, the US announced that it would veto it.
But Remember: An ICJ ruling or a UN resolution lacks enforceability.

UK
🕵️♂️ Assange’s Last Stand in London

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is facing a crucial court hearing in London this week to stop his extradition to the US on spying charges.
Final Chance: The hearing could be his final chance to avoid being extradited to the US, where he faces up to 175 years in prison for publishing classified documents.
Saga: Assange has been on the run for over a decade, first as a political asylum seeker in the Ecuadorian embassy before he was kicked out in 2019, and then in a high-security UK prison.
Appeal: Assange’s lawyers will argue that he can’t get a fair trial in the US, that he is protected by press freedom, and that the Espionage Act of the US doesn’t apply to publishers.
His wife Stella claims that her husband “is being prosecuted for exposing US government criminality including war crimes and torture.”
Implications: Assange’s case is a test of press freedom and the right to expose government secrets.
Meanwhile, The Australian Parliament has passed a motion urging the US and the UK to drop the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and let him return to his homeland.

Ukraine
🔥 Russia Burns Ukraine’s Avdiivka
Russia has claimed full control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, its biggest gain since capturing Bakhmut last May, after a retreat by Ukrainian troops.
Retreat: Ukrainian forces withdrew from the city to avoid encirclement and save lives, but some were still trapped in a huge coke plant.
Reaction: Russian president Vladimir Putin congratulated his soldiers on “the important victory,” while Ukrainian president Zelensky urged Western allies to help his country defeat "the monster.”
Repercussion: The capture of Avdiivka gives Russia full control of the area surrounding Donetsk, a large Ukrainian city seized by Russian proxy forces in 2014.

China
🚗 China’s Cheap EVs Anger West

China is ramping up its production and export of electric vehicles, but the US and the EU are not happy about it.
Accusation: They have accused China of dumping cheap subsidized EVs on the global market, threatening their domestic industries and green goals.
Warning: The US Treasury has told China that it will take action if it tries to flood the world with cheap EVs, especially in advanced manufacturing sectors.
Response: China has defended its EV policies as promoting green development and cooperation, and has launched counter-investigations into some EU products.
Critics of the West are accusing them of killing free trade.
