Hi Global Recap readers,

Napoleon’s Retreat from Moscow (1851), by Adolph Northern
On this day in 1812, Napoleon marched into Russia with 600,000 troops, hoping to intimidate Tsar Alexander I.
We all know how that turned out (disaster), but it’s a reminder that today’s wars aren’t some strange new phenomenon.
What’s actually unusual, by historical standards, is how peaceful the world has been in recent decades.
It also happens to tie in with today’s story: Trump dropped an F-bomb on live TV. Napoleon, for his part, was no stranger to colorful language either. He swore often and creatively, especially when things didn’t go his way.

🇬🇧 UK Charges Palestine Protesters. Seven protesters are facing charges after a Palestine Action rally in Trafalgar Square spiraled into clashes with police on Monday. Cops said it started peacefully but got violent when they tried questioning individuals. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced she’ll move to ban Palestine Action as a terrorist organization next week, calling their actions criminal after a viral video showed them targeting a military jet at RAF Brize Norton. Under the ban, even voicing support for the group could land you 14 years in prison.

🇺🇸 ICE Arrests 11 Iranians. In a 48-hour sweep across 9 cities, ICE arrested 11 Iranian nationals, including a former IRGC member and a suspected Hezbollah affiliate. Five had prior convictions, and one carried an Iranian Army sniper ID. One US citizen was also charged with threatening to “shoot officers in the head” while harboring an illegal immigrant. All this comes days after US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with the US now on alert for "sleeper cell" activation within US borders.

🇹🇭 Thailand Closes Cambodia Borders. Thailand just sealed all crossings into Cambodia after weeks of escalating tension turned toxic. It follows tit-for-tat moves where Cambodia banned Thai films, slashed Thai internet bandwidth, and halted fruit and gas imports, while Thailand hit back with visa curbs and travel blocks. Then came the leaked call, where Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra told ex-Cambodian leader Hun Sen she’d “take care of it” if he needed anything. She was already under fire for being too cozy with him. This latest measure is being criticized as being more of a "damage control."
🇺🇸 Trump Rattles NATO Trust. On his way to a two-day NATO summit in The Hague, Trump dodged a direct answer on whether he backs Article 5 (the alliance’s mutual defense clause), saying he’s “committed to saving lives” and to "being their friend." NATO chief Mark Rutte tried to clean it up, calling the US “totally committed.”
📌 Note: Needless to say, NATO’s Article 5 isn’t as cut-and-dry as “you hit us, we hit back.” It’s a lot more nuanced than that. We’ll dig into it more once the NATO summit wraps, but for now, here’s how NATO itself interprets Article 5—along with Article 6, which adds important context.

🇮🇹 Venice Protesters Win. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez reportedly had to shift their lavish June 28 wedding party out of central Venice after activists threatened to blockade the canals. The new venue is allegedly a converted shipyard on the city’s edge, far from the tourist eye. Protesters called it a “victory,” slamming both Bezos and the mayor for trying to privatize public space: “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more taxes.” In response, the couple dropped €1 million on local lagoon research, but tensions are still high.

Ethics of
Bezos’s Wedding

Wealth inequality and how much privatization a society should allow are hot-button issues that always seem to end up in the political arena. Take Jeff Bezos’s wedding, for example. While the exact location was kept under wraps, reports suggest it was to take place at a major landmark in Venice.
Supporters argue that Bezos earned the right. He took massive risks with his money, time, and career to build Amazon, and got rewarded for it. That’s capitalism in action.
If he wants to throw a lavish wedding and boost the local economy in the process, what’s the harm?
As far as they’re concerned, critics are just trying to distract themselves from their own insecurities and envy.
Critics see it differently.
They say some of the rumored wedding venues are public venues, meant to be shared by all Venetians, not locked down for a billionaire’s private party.
Letting the ultra-wealthy rent out public spaces sends the wrong message about who really gets to enjoy a city’s culture and beauty.

🇮🇷 IRAN & 🇮🇱 ISRAEL
Ceasefire Violation?

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei (left) and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu (right)
Right after I hit send on yesterday’s newsletter, reports started pouring in about bombings: first in central Israel, then not long after, in Iran. Things escalated fast, and before long, Trump was on TV, swearing. 😬
That said, the ceasefire seems to be holding… as of now.
Truce Announced, Then Ignored
Moments after agreeing to a ceasefire, both sides went right back to launching strikes.
Israel accused Iran of violating the deal first; Iran denied it.
Trump fumed online: “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS… BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
Netanyahu’s office later claimed Israel paused further attacks after a direct call with Trump.
What’s Reported
Personally, the first thing I saw was reports of Israel getting hit. Many believe this was Iran getting a last-minute wave of missiles just before the ceasefire was set to kick in.
The wording of the deal didn’t help either: Iran had to hold fire for the first 12 hours, then Israel was supposed to follow. This technically meant Israel could hit Iran for 12 hours before it had to stop. Not exactly a setup for smooth de-escalation.
Below is a video that surfaced moments after the ceasefire was announced. 👇️
Angry Trump
And this led to Trump swearing on TV. Wait till the end:
Intel Leak
On top of everything, a top-secret early intel assessment about the US strike on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend just got leaked. It's easy to understand why Trump might not be too thrilled.
Trump initially called it a “spectacular military success” and said Iran’s capabilities were “completely and totally obliterated.”
However, the Defense Intelligence Agency reportedly told select senators the program was only set back “a few months,” with much of its enriched uranium stockpile still intact.
A US official also said there was “limited” damage to key infrastructure at Fordo.
CNN broke the story; the White House called it “flat-out wrong.”
Here’s what White House Press Secretary Leavitt had to say. She’s clearly not happy, but her words seem to confirm the assessment is real:
“This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong and was classified as ‘top secret’ but was still leaked to CNN by an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community. The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program. Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration.”
Iran Isn’t Backing Down
Meanwhile, Iran made clear it has no intention of freezing its nuclear efforts.
Iran’s Speaker of Parliament said the country will “completely disregard” Israel’s demands.
The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Agency claimed they were prepared, and damage assessments are underway.
