Controversy: Jews Spitting on Christians

Hi Global Recap readers,

Thanks to all your brilliant responses to yesterday’s poll, I’ve written a long response to them after spending a good deal of time digesting them all.

But before going there, we’ve got all this to cover. 👇

🌐 Here’s what’s up around the world:

  • 👋 Bye Bye, McCarthy.

  • 🪲 Bedbugs Invade France, Government in Panic.

  • 🚨 Modi’s War on Media: Journalists Raided Under Anti-Terror Law.

  • 💥 Turkey Bombs PKK Again After Ankara Suicide Blast.

  • 🇮🇱 Controversy: Jews Spitting on Christians.

Let’s get into today’s news.

📈 Top News

👋 Bye Bye, McCarthy. The House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been kicked out of his job by his own party, thanks to a rebel motion by a congressman Matt Gaetz.

This historic vote marks the first time a speaker has been ousted from office in US history.

🪲 Bedbugs Invade France, Government in Panic. France is facing a bedbug crisis as the blood-sucking insects infest schools, trains, cinemas, and homes. The government is holding emergency meetings to tackle the problem and prevent a public health disaster.

Why is it such a big problem? Guess who is hosting next year’s Olympics.

It’s France.

🚨 Modi’s War on Media: Journalists Raided Under Anti-Terror Law. Indian police have searched the homes of journalists linked to NewsClick, a news website critical of the government.

It is also accused of spreading “foreign propaganda” with money from a US millionaire, Neville Roy Singham.

However, critics say the raids are an attack on press freedom and dissent in India.

💥 Turkey Bombs PKK Again After Ankara Suicide Blast. Turkey has launched another round of air strikes on the Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.

You feel like you’ve read this before? Well, you are correct. Turkey fired back at PKK on Oct. 1, following the suicide attack in its capital on the same day that killed two bombers and wounded two cops. Now, they are at it again.

Controversy: Jews Spitting on Christians

🟢 Christians vs. Jews. A shocking video shows Orthodox Jews spitting and shouting at Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem.

🕍 The Holy City’s Unholy Scene. A group of Christian visitors carrying the Four Species, a set of plants used in the Jewish festival of Sukkot, were met with hostility and abuse by some Jewish worshippers in the Old City on Monday. The incident sparked outrage and condemnation from Israeli leaders and religious figures.

Check the video out:

Unfortunately, this type of incident is not isolated. Here are a few of many more such videos from the past:

🗣️ What They Said. The incident drew strong reactions.

Criticism:

  • PM Netanyahu: "We will show zero tolerance against those who harm worshipers."

  • Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Lau: "Such unacceptable behaviors should not be associated with Jewish religious law in any way."

  • Foreign Minister Cohen: "This phenomenon does not represent the values of Judaism."

Defense:

  • Elisha Yered, a far-right extremist: "The custom of spitting near churches or monasteries is an ancient Jewish tradition."

🙏 The Irony. The incident occurred on Sukkot, which Christians observe as the Feast of Tabernacles, a time when thousands of Christian pilgrims flock to Israel to celebrate and pray.

The festival is based on a biblical prophecy that all nations will worship God in Jerusalem.

Please Note: Despite the media spotlight, Jews and Christians in Israel often live in harmony. Tensions exist, as in any society, but they don’t define the overall peaceful coexistence.

Q. What do you think of Elon's meme?

🟢 ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ 22%: Chill, it’s just a joke
🔴 🔴 🔴 🔴 🔴 58%: Insensitive
🟢 ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ 20%: 50/50

🙂 Chill, it’s just a joke

  • Many in this camp expressed their dissatisfaction about America throwing cash at Ukraine like it’s the center of the universe.

  • Some simply thought it was just funny, nothing more or less.

  • One person just yelled this 😂 (another way of screaming “MURICA!”):

😡 Insensitive

  • Surprisingly, many here said that they “used to like Elon,” but his latest antics have left them cold. The general sentiment? “Something just feels off.”

  • And then, there was this 🦆:

🫳 50/50

  • I think this one summarizes the sentiment well:

Conclusion

  • In general, I think people are either fans of Elon or at best, conflicted about him. There is no doubt that he is an admirable businessman and a visionary. But at the same time, he is a meme lord who loves to stir the pot.

  • Many argue that social media has turned us into overreacting zealots. But in my opinion, the response to this story is justified and quite reasoned. Even if you’re heartbroken over the Ukrainians’ struggles, it’s fair to feel frustrated about your tax dollars being jetted off overseas instead of fixing potholes at home.

  • And of course, if this was the red line for you, I am also with you. Those of us who haven’t spent a second on the front lines can’t fathom the burden a leader feels with the fate of their nation on their shoulders.

Thanks a million for all your well thought-out responses. 👍
