🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM
Refusing to Quit

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
Keir Starmer is refusing to quit after Labour's local-election slaughter.
Starmer allies have previously warned that an internal Labour coup could trigger a snap election. Critics now suspect he may use that same threat as his playbook.
In other words, self-destruction.
That leaves Labour with two bad options:
continue under a deeply unpopular PM with a weakened political position
or risk an early general election that could hand power to the opposition
What We Know
4 ministers have already resigned in protest.
A Labour challenger would need support from 20% of Labour MPs (81) to trigger a contest. One tracker now puts the number of MPs calling for Starmer to resign at 92.
A Labour challenger needs support from 20% of Labour MPs (81) to trigger a contest. Currently, one count has 92 MPs calling for a leadership change—well over the requirement.
Some MPs complained that their names appeared on a list of 100 MPs supporting Starmer, when they didn't even sign it in the first place.
📌 Context. The next UK election does not have to be called until 2029, but Labour's bigger problem is that Reform and the Greens are now taking votes from different sides of its coalition.

🇮🇷 IRAN NEWS
Airbase Denial

Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal, Asim Munir (left), and Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi (right), April, 2026.
According to US officials, Pakistan allegedly let Iranian military park their aircraft at its airfield to shield them from US airstrikes.
This is all while presenting itself as a neutral mediator between Tehran and Washington.
If true, this shouldn't be too surprising.
Remember Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif?
We previously wrote about him when he went on X to call Israel "cancerous" and "a curse for humanity."
(Don't try to look for the original X post though, he deleted it)
Pakistan's Denial:
Pakistan confirmed Iranian aircraft are in the country, but said they arrived during the ceasefire for diplomatic, security, and administrative logistics tied to talks.
Islamabad said US aircraft also used Pakistan during the process, and denied any arrangement to preserve Iranian military assets.
Island Invasion

Meanwhile, Kuwait is accusing Iran of sending IRGC-linked officers onto Bubiyan Island on May 1.
What We Know:
They claim that an armed group arrived by rented fishing boat, exchanged fire with Kuwaiti troops, injured 1 service member, and left 4 detainees in custody while 2 others escaped.
Kuwait says the detainees admitted IRGC ties and a mission to carry out “hostile acts.”
Iran rejects all this, saying 4 officers were on maritime patrol and entered Kuwaiti waters after a "navigation disruption."
Nuclear Threat
Iranian MP Ebrahim Rezaei took to X, threatening to enrich uranium to weapons-grade 90% if the US resumes strikes. It is subject to review in the parliament according to Rezaei.
Pahlavi Presses
Washington

Crown Prince of the Pahlavi dynasty of Iran, Reza Pahlavi.
Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's last shah, urged the US to stop negotiating with Tehran's Islamic Regime and openly back regime change, saying the US cannot encourage Iranians to rise up while still chasing a deal with the Islamic Republic.
For Pahlavi supporters, this is a welcome shift. He is now stating plainly what they have long wanted him to say.
Trump’s caution, however, is not irrational. Regime change depends not only on public opposition, but on whether the security forces, military, and key regime insiders defect, split, or stand aside. Without such a break inside the system, the result is less likely to be a clean transition than a dangerous power struggle.
Pahlavi’s Position:
Pahlavi rejected US troops in Iran, saying the "boots on the ground" should be Iranians themselves.
His camp is pushing defections, diaspora mobilization, and a transition plan tied to the Iran Prosperity Project.

🎙️ PODCAST
The Iran Story
Today’s newsletter is a little longer than usual because, well… Iran.
And this is after I cut it down a lot.
I almost cut the final Reza Pahlavi story too, but it felt way too important to leave out.
There’s a lot more backstory here that I can’t squeeze into our daily newsletter, which is exactly why I started Searching History.

🇪🇺 EU
Teen Access Fight

The EU is moving closer to age limits and design bans for social media, with Ursula von der Leyen saying the bloc may propose a “social media delay” for children as soon as this summer.
What We Know:
The coming Digital Fairness Act is expected to target addictive features, manipulative design, misleading influencer marketing, and AI use on platforms.
TikTok is already under EU pressure over infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and personalized recommendations.
Meta is separately accused by the Commission of failing to keep under-13s off Instagram and Facebook.
This shifts the EU's crackdown from illegal content to product design. It is treating engagement loops themselves as a child-safety issue, not just a moderation failure.
📌 Context. The EU’s Digital Services Act already lets regulators pursue large platforms over risks to minors, but the new push could turn that enforcement line into broader platform-design rules.

🦠 HANTAVIRUS
Cruise Quarantine Expands

A hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius has reached 11 reported cases, 9 confirmed, and 3 deaths, with passengers now quarantining after the ship docked in Tenerife and travelers were repatriated.
Current Status:
18 passengers were flown to the US, all currently being monitored.
A French passenger is critically ill in Paris.
The World Health Organization (WHO) expects more cases because symptoms can appear up to 42 days after exposure.
The wider public risk is still described as low.
