Pro-Ukraine Militias Enter Russia

Hi Global Recap readers,

Here’s a reminder about the upcoming Russian election.

  • Date: March 15-17.

  • Caveat: Should no candidate secure a majority of the votes, a subsequent voting round is scheduled for April 7.

  • Inauguration: The winner will be inaugurated on May 7.

  • History: Putin won 77% of the vote in the last election in 2018.

And just in time for this momentous event, several gifts from Ukraine have reached Russia, serving as a reminder to the voters about the country’s condition under Putin’s iron grip.

RUSSIA

Pro-Ukraine Militias Enter Russia

Three paramilitary groups have launched a daring cross-border attack into Russia, reportedly gaining control of parts of Russia’s border regions.

  • 🔥 Conflict. The Liberty of Russia Legion, the Russian Volunteer Corps, and the Siberian Battalion reportedly engaged in combat within Russian territories, aiming to liberate them from “Putin’s dictatorship.”

  • 🇺🇦 Denial. Ukraine disavows any participation. It asserts that the assaults were executed by “independent organizations” made up of Russian citizens. As these Russians engaged in combat within their homeland, it doesn’t officially constitute a direct Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory.

  • 🗳️ Election. Amidst the conflict, the Siberian Battalion denounced the upcoming Russian presidential election (March 15-17) as a farce, advocating for armed struggle over ballots.

The Liberty of Russia Legion also warned that it is “going to the elections.”

US

FBI “Very Concerned” About Terrorist Threat at US Southern Border

FBI Director Christopher Wray

During a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, the FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed serious concerns about a human smuggling network with ISIS ties operating at the US southern border.

  • 🕵️ Investigation. The FBI is actively investigating a network where “some of the overseas facilitators of the smuggling network have ISIS ties.”

  • 🚨 Alert. Last year, a Turkish smuggler linked to ISIS reportedly helped Uzbek asylum-seekers reach the US-Mexico border.

  • 🔍 Unknowns. Wray highlighted the national security risks posed by “gotaways,” individuals who enter the US undetected, potentially including terrorists.

With illegal immigration emerging as a key issue in the forthcoming elections, it’s intriguing to ponder how this storyline will unfold.

The more this problem remains unresolved, the more it seems to play into Trump’s hands, highlighting Biden’s perceived shortcomings in safeguarding US borders.

HAITI

Prime Minister Abandons Ship

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has officially resigned amidst escalating chaos and violence within the nation, yielding to the pressure exerted by the gangs for his resignation.

  • 🚨 Context. A state of emergency was declared after gangs attacked Haiti’s largest prison, resulting in police casualties, blood on the streets, and a mass prisoner escape. The gangs issued an ultimatum for the Prime Minister to resign in order to halt the ongoing violence.

INDIA

Discrimination or Fair Game?

India’s government implemented a controversial citizenship law that critics say is designed to polarize the nation’s population.

  • 📜 Law. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) provides citizenship for non-Muslims from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, who fled religious persecution before December 31, 2014.

  • 🚫 Exclusion. The CAA excludes Muslims and does not offer a path to citizenship for refugees from non-Muslim majority countries, challenging India’s secular constitution.

  • 🗳️ Politics. The timing of the CAA’s implementation, just before general elections, is seen by opponents as a strategic move to polarize voters.

EU

Bosnia’s EU Membership

The European Union’s executive has recommended that the bloc initiate membership talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina, contingent upon the fulfillment of certain conditions.

  • 🌍 Why. The recommendation for EU membership talks shows the EU’s efforts to lure the Balkan nations away from Putin’s influence.
