Iran's President: Dead

Hi Global Recap readers,

Today, the internet went wild, spinning up speculations about the death of Iranian President Raisi.

On X, throughout the day, I saw the trending section shift from benign words to conspiracy theories. Initially, it centered around Iran, but quickly shifted to Israel, WWIII, and even space lasers. 👇

🇮🇷 Iran
President Raisi Dies

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, nicknamed “The Butcher of Tehran,” died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, along with Iran’s foreign minister and other officials.

🔘 Details: President Raisi’s helicopter reportedly suffered a “hard landing” in foggy conditions, leading to a large-scale rescue mission.

  • Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

  • The helicopter crashed in the northwest reaches of Iran.

🔘 Suspicions: Not everyone is convinced of the available details of the incident.

  • Many are questioning why a helicopter transporting such high-ranking officials wasn’t equipped to travel in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

  • Some are claiming that the weather data for the day of the crash was erased.

  • Thereby, they are blaming Israel and the US for assassinating President Raisi.

🔘 Reactions: As expected, there were two reactions to this news.

  • Critics of the Iranian government were seen celebrating Raisi’s death.

  • But there were also Raisi supporters mourning.

  • And of course, there’s Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei, who declared five days of public mourning.

🔘 Aftermath: According to the law, Vice-President Mokhber will serve as Iran’s temporary President until a new leader is chosen. Additionally, he will be a member of a triad council responsible for arranging an election within 50 days following the President’s death.

  • But of course, the elected President needs to be approved by the Supreme Leader Khamenei. So is it really an election?

Assange’s Legal Labyrinth

Julian Assange has won the right to challenge his extradition to the United States, marking a significant turn in a decade-long legal battle.

🔘 Victory: On Monday, Assange’s legal team celebrated a crucial win as the High Court granted permission for a new appeal. This decision allows Assange to contest US assurances regarding his trial and free speech rights.

🔘 Contention: The case hinges on the publication of classified documents about alleged US war crimes nearly 15 years ago, which Assange’s team argues is politically motivated. The US, however, maintains that the leaks endangered lives.

🔘 Assurances: The US has provided assurances that Assange will not face the death penalty and will enjoy the protections of free speech as per the First Amendment, even as an Australian citizen.

  • Despite these assurances, the debate continues over the true intent behind the US’s pursuit of Assange.

  • Assange’s supporters view the case as a pivotal moment for journalistic freedom and the public’s right to know.

🇹🇼 Taiwan
Running Away with a Bill

On Friday, May 17, a lawmaker, in a bid to halt the passage of a bill, stole the bill and ran away with it.

🔘 Chaos: The incident unfolded amidst a heated debate over parliamentary reforms. Lawmakers engaged in physical altercations, with scenes of shoving, tackling, and even leaping onto tables.

🔘 Inauguration: A few days later, on Monday, President-elect Lai Ching-te was sworn in as Taiwan’s President. In his inaugural speech, Lai urged China to “to cease their political and military intimidation against Taiwan.”

🇮🇱 Israel
ICC Targets Israeli Leaders

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking arrest warrants for high-profile Israeli and Hamas leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over alleged war crimes.

🔘 Accusations: The ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has accused several leaders of serious crimes.

  • For Netanyahu and Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, the charges include “causing extermination” and "deliberately targeting civilians in conflict."

  • Hamas leaders are accused of “extermination, murder, taking of hostages, rape, and sexual assault in detention.”

🔘 Precedent: This action marks a significant moment as it is the first time the ICC has targeted the top leader of a close ally of the United States. It would place Netanyahu alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also has an ICC arrest warrant.

🔘 Jurisdiction: Despite Israel and the United States not being members of the ICC, the court asserts jurisdiction over Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank. This claim is based on Palestinian leaders’ acceptance of the court’s founding principles in 2015.

  • The ICC invites Israel to challenge the jurisdiction before the court’s judges.

  • The world watches as a panel of ICC judges considers the application for the arrest warrants.
