Hi Global Recap readers,

I’m not diving into the hantavirus story today, but I did flag it in the At a Glance section below that the World Health Organization (WHO) is now investigating a possible case of rare human-to-human transmission of the deadly virus.

According to the WHO, “risks to the global population from this event [is] low.”

That said:

it’s just a meme guys

🇷🇺🇺🇦 RUSSIA & UKRAINE
Bombs Before Truce

Please be careful when searching for images related to these strikes. There are some horrifyingly graphic photos circulating online.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy accused Moscow of "utter cynicism" after Russian strikes killed at least 23 people (reported numbers are fluid) across Ukraine. Russia fired 11 ballistic missiles and 164 drones, cutting gas to nearly 3,500 people.

Worth remembering, this landed just a day before Ukraine’s unilateral May 6~ ceasefire offer, while Russia announced a May 8–9 Victory Day ceasefire.

What We Know:

  • Zaporizhzhia: 12 killed.

  • Kramatorsk: 5 killed in the city center.

  • Poltava: 3 Naftogaz (oil & gas company) workers and 2 rescuers killed after a follow-up strike.

Synagogue Fire

Counter-terror police are now investigating a suspected arson attack at the former East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel, where a small exterior fire damaged gates and a lock early Tuesday.

What We Know:

  • Firefighters put out the blaze quickly. No injuries reported.

  • Police said early footage indicates the fire was deliberate.

  • No confirmed suspect, motive, or proven link to other attacks.

  • Officers are checking whether it connects to recent attacks on Jewish sites in north and north-west London.

🇮🇷🇺🇸 IRAN & US
Trump Pauses Escorts

In a surprising turn of events, President Trump paused Project Freedom (the US military push to move commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz) just one day after launching it.

  • The US says the pause came because talks with Iran had made enough progress to give a deal a real shot.

  • Skeptics: “the US simply doesn’t want to look weak by repeatedly looking the other way while Iran openly violates the ceasefire.”

  • Supporters: “instead of bombing Iran, Trump is trying to choke the regime out, meaning no deeper US troop or weapons involvement for now.”

More Attacks

But this isn't as *smooth-sailing* as it may seem.

Iran reportedly launched yet another missile strike on the UAE within 48 hours (for the second time), right after Pete Hegseth was out saying the truce was still intact.

🇷🇴 ROMANIA
Government Toppled

Romania’s pro-EU centrist government was toppled Tuesday after Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan lost a no-confidence vote, ending a 10-month austerity push in a key NATO state on Ukraine’s border.

What We Know:

  • Vote: 281 lawmakers backed the motion, easily clearing the 233 needed. Romanian parliament has 464 seats.

  • Alliance: the center-left PSD joined George Simion’s far-right AUR after quitting Bolojan’s coalition.

  • Next step: President Nicușor Dan must now find a new government and has ruled out AUR entering power.

  • Risk: Romania needs deficit cuts and reforms to protect EU funds, its credit rating, and investor confidence.

Bolojan’s enemies solved the immediate problem: removing him. They still need a governing majority that won’t spook Brussels, markets, or Romania’s pro-Western voters.
