Hi Global Recap readers,
The news below was available just before I published yesterday’s newsletter, but I wanted to wait to see how people reacted to the news online.
I think I made the right choice.

Trump’s Conviction Shakes the Nation

On Thursday, the former US President, Donald Trump, has been found guilty on all counts in a historic criminal trial. This marks the first time a former or serving president has been convicted of a crime.
Needless to say, reactions from the left and right differed drastically. However, conservatives appeared to be much more vocal in expressing their outrage online.
🔘 Charges: Trump has been convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records. The lack of a counter-narrative was among the problems that stymied the defense.
Prosecutors accused Trump of participating in an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election.
This included an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, such as concealing a hush money payment to an adult film star, Stormy Daniels.
🔘 Verdict: Trump’s conviction is unprecedented, making him the first former or serving president to be convicted of a crime.
As each juror verbally confirmed the decision to convict him, Trump supposedly turned his head in their direction and followed their faces one by one.
So here’s where this gets interesting…
🔘 Trump’s Accusation: Former President Trump accused Judge Juan Merchan of “not requiring a unanimous decision” on the charges against him.

Therefore, a number of individuals with right-leaning views on platform X argued that the trial was a sham. However, Trump’s claim is a bit misleading.
The jury doesn’t need to agree unanimously on which specific “unlawful means” were used to promote Trump’s election. Therefore, the jury still needs to be in complete agreement that certain “unlawful means” were used.
🔘 Political Motivation: Many are also noting the suspicious timing of the July 11th sentencing date, which is just days before the Republican National Convention on July 15th. They argue this suggests the trial might be politically motivated.

Many of Trump's followers believe that efforts to damage his reputation or prevent him from running by imprisoning him only reveal President Biden's lack of confidence and desperation.
🔘 Diversion: People are also pointing out that while Hunter Biden and perpetrators related to the Jeffrey Epstein case remain untouched, Trump is being persecuted for paying off a porn star.

🔘 Popularity: While left-leaning TV hosts and the general public were celebrating, the Trump campaign's donation site crashed shortly after the guilty verdict.
This happened despite Rachel Maddow of MSNBC claiming that the verdict will sway voters who were on the fence, which may lead to Biden’s victory.
instead, supporters of Trump believe that this event galvanized many people to eventually vote for Trump.
🔘 Elon Musk: Even Musk responded to the verdict, warning about the dangerous precedent it sets.
Indeed, great damage was done today to the public’s faith in the American legal system.
If a former President can be criminally convicted over such a trivial matter – motivated by politics, rather than justice – then anyone is at risk of a similar fate.

Finally, there’s this smirk…
🚨REPORTER: “Mr. President, can you tell us, sir, Donald Trump refers to himself as a political prisoner and blames you directly? What’s your response to that sir?”
BIDEN: *Evil Smirk*

When a reporter questioned Biden on how he would react to Trump's allegations that he was manipulating the justice system against him, Biden responded with this. 👆
Whether you believe that Biden was responsible for using the justice system against Trump or not, this smirk was a bit… creepy.

Biden Secretly Approves Attacking Russian Land

While the country was busy talking about the guilty verdict, it was revealed that the Biden administration secretly approved Ukraine to use US-provided weapons for counter-fire purposes on Russian soil, marking a major departure from the previous policy which prohibited long-range strikes into Russian territory.
🔘 Reversal:
Ukraine can now target Russian missiles, troops, and bombers near Kharkiv.
Strikes must avoid civilian infrastructure and not use long-range missiles deep inside Russia.
Ukrainian officials have been pushing for this policy change to better defend Kharkiv and the country at large.
🔘 Evolution: The policy change reflects an evolution in the US approach to Ukraine’s defense needs, influenced by worsening conditions on the battlefield and Russia’s advances in Kharkiv.
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at a policy shift, saying that the Biden administration's stance “has been to adapt as the conditions have changed, as the battlefield has changed, as what Russia does has changed.”
Allies like the United Kingdom and France, along with bipartisan US lawmakers, have advocated for Ukraine’s right to strike back.
And now, NATO wants to shift its stance too. (See the story below)
However…
It appears that Russian President Putin foresaw these events.
Recently, he conducted nuclear drills near the border and, on Tuesday, issued a stark warning to the West, cautioning that using weapons on Russian soil could lead to “serious consequences.”

🇪🇺 NATO
NATO Also Wants Ukraine to Be Able to Hit Russian Land

Just as when Biden approves US missiles to strike Russian land, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is also suggesting the EU should reconsider restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied weapons.
🔘 Reassessment: Stoltenberg believes it’s time to reevaluate the limitations on Ukraine’s use of provided weaponry, especially for self-defense against Russian aggression.
🔘 Evolution: The conflict’s dynamics have shifted, with most heavy fighting now occurring along the Russia-Ukraine border, necessitating a change in strategy.
Is this suggesting that we’re on the brink of a significant escalation, or could it signal the war’s end as Ukraine manages to hold the Russians at the border?
🔘 Self-Defense: Upholding Ukraine’s right to self-defense under international law, Stoltenberg asserts this includes "striking legitimate military targets outside Ukraine."
He specifically mentions Russian territory near the border as a potential target area.
Some NATO members impose no conditions on weapon use, while others restrict their use to within Ukraine’s borders.
Conversely, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto criticizes the idea, fearing Russian retaliation.

Anti-Islam activist injured in knife attack
The original video of the stabbing is extremely graphic, so I have provided a censored version above. However, a non-censored version isn’t hard to find on X.
A man wielding a knife attacked six people, including a police officer, at a market square in Mannheim, Germany.
🔘 Attack Details:
The attacker targeted anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenberger, who was preparing to hold a rally in the square.
The incident occurred just before noon on Friday.
The attack was captured on a YouTube livestream, showing the assailant stabbing a man and then a police officer who came to help.
The injured officer is in critical condition.
Another police officer shot and injured the attacker.
🔘 Context:
The attack coincided with a far-right anti-Islam rally hosted by Stürzenberger and his organization, Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa (BPE).
BPE confirmed that Stürzenberger was attacked but stated that his life was not in danger.
The attacker injured six people, including five BPE members and one police officer.
🔘 Motivation:
The attacker’s identity and motive remain unknown.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser suggested the possibility of Islamist motivation.
Mannheimer Morgen reported that a political motive cannot be ruled out.
Wait… Isn’t it quite obvious that this was religiously motivated? Why are people suggesting that Islamist motivation is “possible” and that it “cannot be ruled out?”
