Navalny Was To Be Freed

If you believed Putin had no motive to assassinate Navalny, potentially turning him into a martyr, this could be a compelling argument if true.

A shocking video by Alexey Navalny’s team reveals that the Russian president ordered his assassination on the eve of a prisoner swap deal.

  • 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 Exchange. Navalny was supposed to be freed in exchange for Vadim Krasikov, an FSB assassin who murdered a Chechen commander in Germany in 2019. The deal also included two Americans.

  • 🗡️ Betrayal. Putin changed his mind at the last minute and decided to “get rid of the bargaining chip” by killing Navalny in his penal colony.

  • 💫 Madness. Navalny’s ally Maria Pevchikh said Putin had “gone mad with hatred” for Navalny and acted like a “mad mafioso”.

China’s Stake in Alibaba Revealed

Alibaba revealed that the Chinese government has more ownership in some of its business units than previously known.

  • 🎯 Scope. The government stake covers 12 units in Alibaba’s e-commerce, sports, logistics, media, health, and innovation businesses.

  • 🗣️ Why Reveal. The disclosure was made in response to requests from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

  • 📊 Scale. The government ownership ranges from less than 1% to 73.5%, depending on the unit. The units contributed to less than 6% of Alibaba’s total revenue in 2023.

Palestinian PM Resigns

Palestinian PM Mohammad Shtayyeh announced on Monday that he has submitted his government’s resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas.

  • 🧾 Reasons. Shtayyeh cited the “political, security, and economic developments” related to the Israeli “aggression” and “genocide” against the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as the main factors behind his decision.

  • 💭 Expectations. Shtayyeh voiced his aspiration for the upcoming phase to necessitate new plans to extend the Palestinian Authority’s sovereignty over all of “their land” - which of course includes Israeli land.

Israel’s Plan to Evacuate Gaza

The Israeli government has submitted a plan to evacuate the population of Gaza from areas of fighting, as it prepares for an offensive on the city of Rafah.

  • 🌇 Rafah. The southernmost city in Gaza, home to over a million people and the last stronghold of Hamas.

  • 🕊️ Hostage Deal. A possible agreement to ceasefire and exchange prisoners may delay this Rafah operation, but according to Israeli PM Netanyahu, they will “do it anyway” because “it has to be done.”

Middle East

Allies Strike Houthis Yet Again

The US and UK forces launched their fourth joint strikes on 18 Houthi sites in Yemen on Saturday, targeting their missile and drone capabilities.

  • 🚀 Response: The strikes were a response to the Houthis’ sustained and escalating attacks on civilian and commercial vessels in the region.

  • 🔖 Reason: The allies said they acted to “further degrade” the Iran-backed rebels, who have been attacking shipping in the Red Sea.

It seems like this is becoming the norm.
