Say goodbye to pop music Chechnya
Hi Global Recap readers,
Swifties… assemble!
In what seems like a move out of the playbook of Stalin’s Soviet Union, music that is basically too slow or too fast has been banned in a country whose soldiers are colloquially called TikTok warriors.
The irony… 👇

CHECHNYA
All music too fast or too slow banned

Singer Taylor Swift (left) and Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov (right).
Authorities in Chechnya have imposed a unique restriction on music, mandating that all songs must adhere to a specific tempo range.
🚫 Ban. The Chechen government has banned music with tempos outside the 80 to 116 BPM range, effectively prohibiting popular genres like pop and techno.
🎵 Cultural Heritage. The directive seeks to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Chechen people, ensuring that music and dance align with traditional “Chechen mentality and musical rhythm.”
Who else stifled musical creativity in the region before? I think his name started with Sta… and ended with lin…

SWITZERLAND
2,000 women vs Switzerland

In a groundbreaking decision, an international court in France has ruled that Switzerland’s inadequate climate action violates human rights.
🌡️ Urgency. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found Switzerland guilty of neglecting its duty to combat the climate crisis, impacting the health and quality of life of its citizens, particularly a group of over 2,000 Swiss women.
✍🏻 Logic. Over 2,000 Swiss women have expressed that their health and quality of life have been adversely affected by the heat waves caused by climate change, and they fear it could potentially be life-threatening.
Could this be the dawn of “climate justice?”

GERMANY
Genocide allegations denied

Germany vehemently denied accusations of enabling genocide in Gaza, as brought forth by Nicaragua at the UN court.
🔍 Scrutiny. Nicaragua’s claims against Germany at the International Court of Justice allege that German military aid to Israel facilitates genocide and breaches international humanitarian law.
🧑⚖️ Legal. Germany’s legal team argues that the accusations lack substance and are not supported by factual or legal grounds.
𐄷 Debate. The focus is on Nicaragua’s request for provisional measures, including halting German aid to Israel. However, Germany contends that without a court ruling Israel’s actions, it cannot be deemed in violation of the obligation to prevent genocide.

ISRAEL-HAMAS
Hamas doesn’t like Israel’s proposal

Hamas and Israel’s ceasefire talks remain deadlocked as Hamas deems Israel’s ceasefire proposal as insufficient.
🫱🏻🫲🏼 Demands.
Israel seeks a prisoners-for-hostages exchange but is not ready to halt military actions.
Hamas insists on a complete cessation of the offensive and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
🏠 Refuge. Rafah stands as the last sanctuary for displaced Palestinians amidst the destruction.
Israel also reportedly has “a date” set for a Rafah invasion.

MEXICO
Former Ecuadorian VP hospitalized

Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas is escorted by the Special Penitentiary Action Group (GEAP) at the maximum security prison La Roca in Guayaquil on April 6, 2024.
After being arrested for raiding the Mexican embassy to seek asylum, Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas was hospitalized.
✍🏻 Context. After serving his sentence, Glas was freed from jail in November 2022. However, he soon found himself under the threat of re-arrest for purportedly misusing funds that were meant to aid in rebuilding after the earthquake of 2015.
🤢 Sickness. Glas reportedly fell ill at the prison in Guayaquil after refusing to eat prison food for 24 hours prior to his hospitalization.
