Hi Global Recap readers,
Longtime readers know I’ve argued NATO matters to the US for far more than dollars and cents.
It helps underpin market stability.
It extends American military reach.
It reinforces US hegemony by deepening Europe’s reliance on the US for security.
But if key allies are now limiting access to bases and airspace, then what exactly is the US still getting out of the alliance? That changes the calculation. 👇🏼

Rubio Threatens
NATO Review

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Secretary of State Rubio is openly questioning NATO now.
This comes after France, Italy, and Spain each moved to block parts of the US military effort, whether through airspace, bases, or both.
Rubio said the US protects Europe, but it can't use European bases to protect its own interests—making it a "one way street."
Trump gets the final call, but Rubio pledged to "reexamine" the US's relationship with NATO after the Iran war is over.

🇻🇪 VENEZUELA
Machado Eyes Return

“Excellent meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Thank you for your commitment to democracy, freedom, and the well-being of Venezuelans. The day is approaching when we will gather our families in Venezuela! We move forward!”
@mariacorinamachado
Venezuelan opposition leader in exile, Maria Corina Machado, met US Secretary Rubio in Washington on Tuesday.
She says she's getting "close" to returning to Venezuela.
The USA just reopened its embassy in Caracas.
Washington still isn't publicly backing Machado to lead the transition yet.
Maduro's former VP Delcy Rodriguez is the interim head of state for now.
📌 Context. There’s still a lot of debate over Trump’s approach to Venezuela.
One camp says it was a mistake not to back Machado, since she’s clearly the most popular opposition figure among Venezuelans.
Others argue the more realistic move is to have the current government pressured into acting in the US’s interests until genuinely fair elections can happen. The logic is that the military probably is not going to suddenly switch sides just because a new president gets installed.

Trump to Address Nation

US President Donald Trump.
Trump says he'll address the nation Wednesday night.
The speech is set for 9 pm ET.
Hours earlier, he said US forces could leave in two or three weeks.
He also said Iran "doesn't need a deal" for that to happen.
The stock market pumped HARD after President Trump hinted that the war will be over "soon."
🇮🇷 IRAN
Tehran Wants Guarantees

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says it's willing to end the war.
But Iran wants guarantees that the attacks won't happen again.
However, despite Trump saying that the war will be over “soon,” a 3rd aircraft carrier (USS Bush) departed on Tuesday, heading to the Middle East.
Thousands of paratroopers and Marines are also arriving in the region.
So is Trump buying time for a real escalation, or is this just a show of force meant to pressure the regime into backing down?
🇺🇦 UKRAINE
Easter Energy Truce

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy is calling for a brief Easter truce on strikes against energy infrastructure.
He says he'll ask US mediators on Wednesday to carry it to Moscow.
says it'll reciprocate if Russia stops hitting power sites.
However, the Kremlin isn't buying it and wants a full peace deal, rather than a temporary halt.
