New Lethal Chinese Virus

Hi Global Recap readers,

Scientists trained by the Chinese military have published a paper about their creation of a new, deadly coronavirus.

But this time, they are open about it.

Honestly, why do they keep creating these things in the first place?

🌐 Around the world:

  • 🦠 New Chinese-made Virus.

  • 🇹🇼 Taiwanese election.

  • 📈 Inflation skyrockets to 211% in Argentina.

  • 👨‍⚖️ Missouri suing China.

  • 🇺🇸🇬🇧 US and UK team up to attack Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Let’s get into today’s news.

🔬 New Lethal Chinese Virus

Chinese military-trained doctors concocted their own pangolin coronavirus, unleashing it on unsuspecting mice with fatal consequences.

“100% mortality rate” to be more precise.

  • Lethal Outcome: Within days, the infected mice lost weight, became lethargic, eyes turned white, and eventually died.

  • Surprising Spread: The virus ravaged the mice’s brains, eyes, and lungs, with a deadly spike in brain infection.

  • Human Risk: Now scientists are worried that the virus may infect humans.

Wait… then why make it in the first place?

🔥 Taiwanese Election

From left to right: The current vice president Lai Ching-te, Ko Wen-je, and Hou Yu-ih.

China’s military warns of crushing any Taiwan independence moves as the island gears up for a pivotal election.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions and is seen as an attempt to influence voters towards Beijing-friendly candidates.

  • Election Eve: China’s stark warning issued just before Taiwan’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

  • When’s the election? Saturday, January 13th, 2024.

  • Candidates Clash: The Vice President of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te from the Democratic Progressive Party, is competing with:

    • Kuomintang’s Hou Yu-ih, who is known for his closer ties with China,

    • Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People’s Party, who is interested in initiating dialogue with China while also maintaining strong relations with the US.

📈 Inflation Skyrockets

Argentina’s economy is reeling with a staggering 211.4% annual inflation rate for 2023, hitting a 32-year high.

  • Adjustment Pain: The newly-elected President Javier Milei has introduced several radical economic policies, including a 50% devaluation of the Argentine currency, as part of a series of bold steps aimed at controlling inflation.

  • Poverty Spike: An estimated 40% of Argentinians are grappling with poverty.

  • Price Surge: Essentials like food and meds saw hikes up to 40% in December, but overall, the country saw a 25.5% jump - a slight relief from the predicted 30%.

Despite “horrible numbers,” Milei is predicting an inflation downfall.

🔍 Missouri Suing China

Missouri’s bold legal move against China over COVID-19 mask hoarding gets the green light from federal judges.

The Show-Me State isn’t showing any signs of backing down, taking a stand where others might tread lightly.

  • Ruling: Judges permit one claim to proceed, accusing China of manipulating the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) market.

  • Dissent: However, Chief Judge Smith argues for total dismissal, citing political and diplomatic delicacies.

  • Next Steps: Missouri’s AG Andrew Bailey gears up for court, aiming to prove China’s alleged market maneuvers.

US and UK Team Up to Attack Iran-Backed Houthi Rebels

🚀 Strikes Light Up Yemen. On Friday, the US and UK launched a series of air strikes across Yemen, targeting various sites used by the Iran-backed Houthis.

💥 Targets. The bombardment targeted multiple sites controlled by the Iranian-backed rebels, killing at least five and injuring six.

Among the targeted were:

  • The Al-Dailami Air Base north of Sanaa

  • The airport in the port city of Hodeida

  • A camp east of Saada,

  • The airport in the city of Taiz, and

  • an airport near Hajjah.

⛴️ Weapons.

  • US: Tomahawk missiles from US Navy destroyers and a nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine.

  • UK: Typhoon fighter jets.

Apart from these assets, the British Typhoons were supported by two air-to-air refueling tankers.

🔥 Why It Matters. The strikes were a retaliation for drone and missile attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, that are in anyway linked to Israel, since November. The Red Sea is a vital artery for worldwide commerce, and any disturbances there could result in increased inflation and economic instability.

With the elections coming up for BOTH the US and UK, they can’t risk it.

📢 Biden’s Firm Stance. President Joe Biden emphasized that such actions are to protect personnel and maintain freedom of navigation.

💬 Houthis Response. The Houthis’ military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, stated that the strikes would not go without retaliation, indicating a potential intensification of hostilities.

🕊️ Calls for Restraint. Iran condemned the attack, while Saudi Arabia, supporting Yemen’s government-in-exile, has seemingly distanced itself from the attacks.
