Missile Test Goes Wrong

Hi Global Recap readers,

Is it just me, or is the world on the brink with all this fiery discourse?

Citizens are at odds over distant conflicts, taking hardline stances on issues while overlooking nuances. Countries are stockpiling nukes and arms. It’s a powder keg waiting to explode.

Nonetheless, I hope you have a restful weekend. Hit pause on geopolitics - we’ll be back, guns blazing, next week.

🌐 Around the world:

  • US missile test goes wrong.

  • Russia ditches nuclear treaty.

  • Israel expels Gazans.

  • Unmanned vessel fires “lethal munitions.”

  • Israel says no to ceasefire.

  • Hezbollah leader breaks silence.

Let’s get into today’s news.

🚀 Missile Test Goes Wrong

The US Air Force had to blow up a Minuteman III missile over the Pacific Ocean after it malfunctioned during a test launch from California.

What’s Minuteman III? An American land-based intercontinental ballistic missile that can carry single or multiple nuclear warheads.

Simply: It’s a nuke.

The US Air Force is investigating the cause of the anomaly.

🇷🇺 Russia Ditches Nuclear Treaty

President Putin has signed a law to revoke Russia’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a pact that bans all nuclear explosions. The US and other countries have condemned the move as a “step in the wrong direction” and a threat to global security.

I wonder what Putin is planning to do with his newly found freedom.

🚫 Go Back Gazans

Israel expelled all Gazan workers and cut all ties. Despite Gaza being labeled as Israel’s “open prison,” around 18,000 Palestinians had been working in Israel before Hamas’ massacre on October 7.

Interesting Facts: As Gazans grapple with a staggering 50% unemployment rate and harsh living conditions, Hamas leaders enjoy a life of luxury in Qatar. Meanwhile, they’re rumored to be sitting on a secret $1 billion portfolio.

🚀 Unmanned US Vessel Fires

In a first for the region, Task Force 59 of the US Navy has made history by launching “lethal munitions” from an unmanned boat in the Middle East. This exercise, known as “Digital Talon,” was remotely controlled by a human operator ashore.

The Navy says this is a significant step forward for unmanned and AI technologies.

🇮🇱 No Hostage Return, No Stopping.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, left, sitting with Israeli PM Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.

Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected US Secretary of State Blinken’s call for a humanitarian pause in the Gaza Strip, saying Israel will not stop bombing until Hamas returns its hostages.

Watch: Blinken’s emotional remarks after the meeting with PM Netanyahu.

Lebanon

Hezbollah Leader Breaks Silence

🎙️ Hezbollah Leader Finally Speaks. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, delivered a highly anticipated speech on Friday, marking his first public address since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war.

👀 Hezbollah vs Israel. Hezbollah and Israel’s bitter feud is rooted in the 1980s Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. They fought a devastating war in 2006, which ended with a UN-brokered ceasefire, but left both sides with unresolved grievances.

👇 Background. Here’s a quick context for those unaware of the situation between Israel, Hamas in Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

  • For four weeks, Israel and Hamas have been locked in a deadly conflict.

  • It was sparked by a surprise Hamas attack on October 7 that claimed over 1,500 lives.

  • On October 7, Hamas terrorists stormed Israeli borders on foot, paragliders, and motorcycles, breaching nearby kibbutzim and a music festival to ruthlessly massacre Israeli citizens and seize hostages.

  • Israel hit back with airstrikes and ground invasions, which continue to this day.

  • The war has ignited further tensions, drawing in Hezbollah, a Shia Muslim militant group backed by Iran in Southern Lebanon (north of Israel).

🗯️ What Hassan Nasrallah Said:

  • The US is “totally responsible for the war” in Gaza.

  • The October 7 attack was “100% a Palestinian operation” and “purely the result of Palestinian planning and implementation,” dodging speculations about Hezbollah’s involvement in instigating the war.

  • Hezbollah has already entered the battle on October 8, a day after Hamas’ terrorist attack.

  • There are two objectives for Hezbollah now - end the war, and “enable the resistance to triumph.”

  • Hamas was successful in showing that Israel is weaker than a “spider’s web.”

In short, he’s pinning the chaos on the US, claiming Hezbollah was blindsided by the October 7 attack, and voicing staunch support for Gaza’s victory in the war.
