🇮🇷🇺🇸 IRAN & USA
Shoot and Kill

Trump ordered the USA military to "shoot and kill" Iranian small boats laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran's Revolutionary Guard attacked three cargo ships and captured two. No one is reporting US forces have carried out the order yet, though.

Dates:

  • Apr. 22: Iran seized the MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, two container ships trying to leave the Gulf through Hormuz. A third ship, Euphoria, was also targeted but got away.

  • Apr. 23: The USA seized the Iranian-linked oil tanker Majestic X in the Indian Ocean. It was previously called Phonix and had already been sanctioned for Iranian crude smuggling.

Ghalibaf Kicked Out (?)

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf

A report from Israel claimed parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had resigned (or kicked out of) Iran's negotiating team after IRGC intervention, then Iranian voices pushed back and said it was fake news.

But here's the weird part: when this claim started circulating, Iranian President Pezeshikian, FM Araghchi, and Ghalibaf himself all posted nearly identical posts on X about unity.

Here's how some are reading it:

  • The rift between the IRGC and other factions within the regime is growing larger in what seems like a power struggle.

  • Trump’s chaotic messaging about Iranian officials supposedly agreeing to this or that—only for the IRGC to later walk it back—just makes things worse (for Iran). This likely feeds paranoia among regime elites who increasingly seem worried that one of their own is snitching to the US.

  • To make things worse, the US is choking off their revenue by blockading Iranian ports, which (if reports are true) may have even lower-level officials bitter over delayed or missing pay.

📌 Context. Ghalibaf has been central to recent USA-facing diplomacy, while Tehran has also been warning that pressure around Hormuz can become a shipping problem fast.

🇩🇪 GERMANY & IRAN
Pahlavi Gets Attacked

A protester doused the exiled crown prince of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, with red liquid outside Germany's federal press building in Berlin. This happened moments after he criticized the Iran-US ceasefire and urged Europe to stop treating Tehran like a negotiating partner at a press event.

This is reportedly Pedram Hossein Monfared

  • Police detained the attacker, and Pahlavi appeared unhurt.

  • Kayhan Life, a London-based Iranian diaspora outlet critical of the Islamic Republic, identified him as Pedram Hossein Monfared, whose father is reportedly an IRGC member.

  • Police said the liquid “appeared to be” tomato juice, though his supporters expressed concern that it could have been a substance with delayed effects.

📌 Context. Pahlavi has lived outside Iran since the 1979 revolution and is trying to turn the war-era opening into a claim on Iran's political future.

🇪🇺 EUROPE
Ukraine Loan: Unblocked

(Left to right) President of the European Council, António Costa, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The EU finally approved a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to Ukraine after Hungary dropped a veto that had stalled the deal for two months. Hungary used the loan as leverage, then stepped aside once the key Russian oil pipeline (Druzhba pipeline) came back online.

The blockage cleared once a key Russian oil pipeline to Hungary came back online.

Ukraine gets:

  • cash for state spending and war costs

  • military funding tied to EU industry

  • coverage for most of its 2026-2027 budget gap

EU members get:

  • joint borrowing spread across 24 countries

  • leverage over Ukraine via reform conditions

📌 Context. The EU is financing Ukraine through joint debt while freezing over €200 billion in Russian assets that could offset repayment if reparations ever materialize. The loan is expected to cover about two-thirds of Ukraine's financing needs over the next two years.

🇺🇦 UKRAINE
Command Post Hit

Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces say they hit a Russian FSB command post in occupied Donetsk with 8 high-precision FP-2 strikes., killing 12 officers and wounding 15. The operation was reportedly run with Azov units against an FSB special operations node.

Russia has not confirmed the losses.

📌 Context. Russia made almost no net territorial gains in March for the first time since 2023.

🇱🇧🇮🇱 LEBANON & ISRAEL
Truce Gets 3 Weeks

Israel’s Iron Dome intercepting Hezbollah rockets minutes before the deal was announced.

President Donald Trump announced an extension of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire by 3 weeks after Oval Office talks with the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors. The 10-day pause was set to expire Sunday

But many are questioning whether this really is a "ceasefire."

  • The thing is, Hezbollah was never at the negotiations table.

  • Hezbollah fired missiles at northern Israel and Israel kept striking what it called militant targets, while both sides accused the other of breaking the deal.

📌 Context. Hezbollah is both an Iran-backed Shiite terrorist group and a major Lebanese political party, which is why Lebanon can negotiate with Israel while not fully controlling the force Israel is fighting.
