Parliament Dissolved
Hi Global Recap readers,
I know what you are thinking:
“Someone dissolved parliament? A coup?”
Nope, it is not as dire as it sounds, as it is well within the bounds of the French President to do so according to the French constitution. 👇
🇫🇷 France
Macron Dissolves Parliament
In a surprising twist, President Macron dissolved the National Assembly after a stinging defeat. Now, it’s election time.
🔘 Election Shock: Macron’s party faced a humbling loss in the European Parliament elections, prompting him to call a snap legislative election.
"I've decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future through the vote. I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly.”
The upcoming two-round vote will be held on June 30 and July 7.
This decision is a gamble that could further weaken his party before his term ends in 2027.
🔘 Rival’s Triumph: Marine Le Pen's National Rally party, a major rival to President Macron, surged ahead in the EU parliamentary election, significantly outpacing Macron's centrist party.
The announcement followed early projections from France's EU parliamentary elections, showing the far-right National Rally party leading significantly.
National Rally party, which advocates anti-immigration and nationalism, was estimated to receive around 31%-32% of the votes.
Macron’s Renaissance party was projected to get around 15%.
Macron himself was not a candidate in the EU elections, and his term as president continues for three more years.
The party’s lead candidate, Jordan Bardella, declared "The French people have given their verdict, and it’s final."
It is posts like these, regardless of their veracity, challenge people’s acceptance of immigrants (legal or illegal), especially those who assert their perspectives as the “right ones.”

🔘 European Upheaval: Across the EU, conservative parties are gaining ground.
Some people on social media are saying this result is unsurprising, as many are now fed up with years of multiculturalism and open immigration policies.
But that’s not all… 👇

🇧🇪 Belgium
Prime Minister Resigns

🔘 Resignation: Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo waved goodbye to his role after his party, the Flemish Liberals and Democrats party (Open VLD), faced a crushing defeat.
It’s a tough pill to swallow, with less than 7% of votes and a drop to ninth place.
De Croo will stay as caretaker prime minister until the seven-party coalition puzzle is pieced together.
🔘 Rightward Shift: The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) stole the spotlight, potentially propelling its leader, Bart De Wever, to the prime minister’s seat.
They outshone the far-right Vlaams Belang, securing 22% of the votes.
The N-VA’s victory sets the stage for intricate coalition talks, especially with the Mouvement Reformateur winning big in Brussels and Wallonia.
🔘 Election Day: Belgians had their hands full with triple elections, casting ballots for general, regional, and European seats.
The far-right flexed its muscles, but the N-VA held firm, leaving Vlaams Belang in the dust.
Despite their strong showing, the anti-immigrant Eurosceptics of Vlaams Belang may find themselves on the sidelines, away from the power play.

📊 Poll

Migrants arriving at the harbor of the Italian island of Lampedusa in September 2023.
Politicians might advocate for an open immigration policy for a variety of reasons, with the most apparent being a falling birth rate.
In nations like Japan, which are conservative and culturally insular, grappling with a birth rate below 2.1 and an aging populace presents unique challenges.
Their most viable strategies are:
Opening up their borders
Promoting childbirth among couples.
However, it seems that humans aren’t particularly tolerant of external factors changing their nation’s cultural identity.

🇵🇱 Poland
Fire at Arms Factory

In Poland’s southeast, a mysterious blaze at Mesko, a Polish weapons factory, claimed a life and injured another.
🔘 Origins: How did the fire start? It is yet a mystery.
Initial reports indicate a possible equipment malfunction, but officials have not dismissed other potential causes, especially considering the ongoing conflict in the neighboring eastern country of Ukraine.
🔘 Details:
In 2022, an agreement was established between Ukraine and Mesko for the delivery of a variety of ammunition across multiple calibers.
The fire coincides with the U.S. launching an info-warfare unit in Poland, battling Russian disinformation.
Europe’s on edge, with several sabotage and disruptions blamed on Russian secret services, but no fingers pointed at this incident… yet.

🇲🇽 Mexico
They Keep Getting Shot

🔘 Tragedy: A local councilwoman, who supported the party of the newly elected female President Claudia Sheinbaum, was tragically shot outside her home in Guerrero.
Esmeralda Garzon’s murder follows the assassination of Yolanda Sanchez Figueroa, the mayor of Cotija killed with her bodyguard outside a gym.
🔘 Violence: The elections have been marred by unprecedented brutality, with at least 23 political candidates killed during the campaign.
Non-governmental organizations report an even higher number of at least 30. At least 50, if their relatives and other victims are counted.
The violence peaked with the on-camera murder of a mayoral hopeful, Alfredo Cabrera, and the survival of two others despite attacks in Chiapas.
