Extra Credit for Supporting Palestine at US College

Hi Global Recap readers,

First, it was Harvard, now it’s UC Berkeley. I’ve seen colleges give out extra credit for community service, but for staging a national walkout for Palestine?

If you are in college, you may want to check out if anyone around you is like Victoria Huynh. Stay tuned for an In-Depth analysis below.

🌐 Around the world:

  • Israel storms into Gaza overnight.

  • Putin tests nukes.

  • Qatar sentences 8 Indian Navy veterans.

  • Germany to strengthen migrant deportation rules.

  • Extra Credit for Supporting Palestine at US College.

Let’s get into today’s news.

🚀 Israel Storms Gaza, Prepare for “Next Stages of Combat.” Israel’s tanks and troops have entered the northern Gaza Strip, targeting Hamas positions and infrastructure. The IDF says the mission is part of the preparation for the “next stages of combat.”

☢️ Russia Plays Nuclear War Games with Putin. Russia’s military has simulated a nuclear strike in a drill overseen by President Putin, hours after parliament voted to withdraw from a global nuclear test ban treaty. Putin said the move was to “mirror” the US stance, which signed but didn’t authorize the nuclear test ban.

👮 Qatar Sentences 8 Indian Navy Veterans to Death. Qatar has convicted eight former Indian Navy officers of spying for Israel on a secret submarine project. The men worked for a private firm that helped the Qatari armed forces. They were arrested in August last year while working for a local company.

India has expressed shock and vowed to appeal.

🚫 Germany Cracks Down on Asylum-Seekers. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has proposed new legislation to make it easier to deport migrants who are not eligible to stay in Germany. The bill would extend pre-deportation custody, allow residential searches, and remove advance notice of deportations in some cases.

This aims to expedite the deportation of rejected migrants, including those involved in criminal organizations.

👩‍🎓 Extra Credit. A grad student at UC Berkeley offered students extra credit for attending a pro-Palestine rally amid the ongoing conflict with Israel.

📧 The Email. Victoria Huynh, a graduate student in the Department of Ethnic Studies, sent an email to her students with a "field trip and/or extra credit opportunity." She gave them two options:

  • Attend the national student walkout against the “settler-colonial occupation of Gaza,” or

  • Watch a documentary on Palestine and contact their local California representative.

The email said that doing either of these would count as a field trip or an extra 5 points on their grade.

🔥 The Backlash. The email sparked outrage and criticism on social media, with some accusing Huynh of promoting antisemitism and bias. Some users also questioned the legality and ethics of offering extra credit for political activism at a public university.

🙅‍♂️ The Correction.

"As soon as the administration was made aware of the assignment, it moved quickly to ensure that it would be changed. The situation has been remedied, the assignment has been changed and there are now a number of options for extra credit, not just one.”
