Rogue EU Official

Hi Global Recap readers,

Remember Thierry Breton?

He’s the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner who sent a warning letter to Elon Musk, demanding compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act just before Musk’s conversation with Donald Trump on X.

It turns out that this letter was not approved by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Now, the European Commission is furious about this unsanctioned action.

According to one official, Breton is known for having “his own mind and way of working and thinking.” 🤦‍♂️

🇮🇷 IRAN
One Way to Delay Attacks

It seems like we’re at a tipping point with Iran. Heading into Thursday, this is the news to watch.

With US intelligence suggesting for days that Iran’s retaliation against Israel is “IMMINENT,” Iran has practically handed the world a blueprint to stop itself: a ceasefire deal on Thursday.

Ceasefire Talks

Talks are set to begin on Thursday in Egypt or Qatar. And this talk may decide how Iran acts.

  • A senior Iranian security official has warned that if Gaza ceasefire talks fail or if Iran believes Israel is deliberately stalling the negotiations, Iran is prepared to launch an attack.

  • Although Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement, Iran is holding Israel responsible for Haniyeh’s assassination.

Broader Implications

An anonymous source supposedly said that a ceasefire could lead to a smaller, symbolic response from Iran.

  • Meir Litvak, a senior researcher at Tel Aviv University’s Alliance Center for Iranian Studies, believes that while Iran would prioritize its own interests over supporting its ally Hamas, it is also keen to avoid escalating the situation into a full-scale war.

  • 🤞 This is promising, suggesting there’s hope for avoiding escalation into a broader conflict. However, it also suggests one of two things:

    1. The international community is great at pressuring Iran not to attack.

    2. Iran really doesn’t want to—and cannot afford to—attack. And Israel knows this.
