Japan
Fukushima Water Release

🌊 Japan made an announcement today, revealing its plan release water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean starting Thursday.
👨💼 Prime Minister Kishida’s statement. He assured that the release of radioactive wastewater from the nuclear site, equivalent to over 500 Olympic swimming pools, is "safe."
🔬 Water Treatment. The water is set to undergo a process of dilution and filtration, eliminating all radioactive elements EXCEPT tritium. TEPCO affirmed that they will implement "essential measures to protect the marine environment, ensure food safety, and maintain public health."
👩🔬 Expert Opinion. Tony Hooker, a nuclear expert from the University of Adelaide, emphasized that the level of tritium present in the Fukushima plant's water significantly falls below the drinking water limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
"Tritium has been released [by nuclear power plants] for decades with no evidential detrimental environmental or health effects."
🌏 Global Reaction. China, which had already imposed partial restrictions on shipments of Japanese food, openly criticized this announcement. Hong Kong also joined in, announcing a prohibition on importing "aquatic products" from ten specific regions in Japan.
