Stabbed Again

Hi Global Recap readers,

Just when I thought a brutal stabbing in a peaceful German city of Mannheim was an anomaly…

It happened again.

What state of mind does someone need to be in to stab another person at close range? 👇

🇩🇪 Germany
Political Knife Attack (Again)

In Germany, the political stage isn’t just heating up; it’s getting downright dangerous.

Politicians are facing more than just tough debates. They now have to dodge box cutters too.

🔘 Attack: A “far-right” politician from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party found himself in a sharp situation when a box cutter-wielding assailant took a swipe at him in Mannheim.

  • AfD bore the brunt last year with 86 violent attacks, topping the charts over other parties.

  • The Greens weren’t far behind, experiencing 62 violent incidents themselves.

🔘 Tension: The incident has thrown fuel on the fiery national debate over political violence.

  • With politicians on the receiving end of physical aggression, the conversation has shifted from policy to safety.

  • And when politicians are affected, things get done quickly it seems.

🔘 Context: This isn’t a one-off event; it’s part of a troubling trend of violent attacks on German politicians.

  • In fact, just days before this attack, another knife incident in the same city claimed the life of a police officer.

  • The suspected motive? Islamist extremism.

🇹🇷 Turkey
BRICS Expansion Buzz

Turkey’s latest diplomatic dance isn’t with its NATO allies but with BRICS, an alliance comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Is Ankara shifting its axis?

🔘 Welcome: Putin is reportedly all smiles over whispers about Turkey’s wish to join BRICS.

  • On Monday, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan jetted off to Beijing, stirring the pot of international relations with a high-level chinwag since 2012.

🔘 Interest: BRICS is turning heads, with countries lining up to join it. But Kremlin spokesman Peskov is playing it cool, suggesting BRICS can’t take everyone in.

  • However, it’s yet unclear whether Turkey will officially ask to join the squad.

🔘 Alliance: This makes Turkey’s relationship with NATO complicated, as BRICS is seen as a primary contender to the Western Order.

  • Considering Turkey’s track record of leveraging its diplomatic relationships to its advantage, it would not be unexpected if Turkey were disclosing this information to gain leverage with its Western partners.

🇨🇦 Canada
First to Cut Rates

🔘 Easing: The Bank of Canada has taken the scissors to its key policy rate, cutting it down to 4.75% from 5%.

  • It’s the first G7 nation to make such a cut in four years, aiming to relieve the highly indebted consumers without going on a rate-slashing spree.

  • Governor Tiff Macklem hinted at a “let’s enjoy the moment” approach, with future cuts depending on inflation’s behavior and economic data.

🔘 Comparison: While Canada cools down its rates, the US Federal Reserve is playing it hot, with only one expected cut this year.

  • The BoC’s move raises eyebrows about how far it can diverge from its American counterpart before things get too icy.

  • That being said, the EU is also expected to cut rates on Thursday.

  • The Canadian dollar took a slight dip following the announcement, hinting at market sensitivity to these monetary maneuvers.

🔘 Forecast: Economists are seeing more rate reductions on the horizon for Canada.

  • Some predict a cut as soon as July, while others foresee a series of cuts throughout the year, all while keeping an eye on inflation’s path back to the 2% target.

  • The next rate announcement is circled on calendars for July 24.

🇮🇱 Israel
ICC vs. Israel Showdown

The White House is clashing with Congress over a bill to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) for targeting Israeli officials.

🔘 Bipartisan Bill: A House bill to sanction the ICC, co-led by Reps. Chip Roy and Brian Mast, passed with a 247-155 vote, including support from 42 Democrats.

  • The bill responds to the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

  • Despite the Biden administration’s opposition, the bill showcases a rare bipartisan agreement on defending Israel against the ICC’s moves.

🔘 White House Stance: The Biden administration opposes the bill as it believes there are “more effective ways to defend Israel.”

  • They’re ready to work with Congress on alternatives, but their stance caused a rift in bipartisan talks.

  • The breakdown in cooperation is a setback for those seeking a united front in US foreign policy regarding Israel and the ICC.

🔘 What This Means: The bill’s passage sends a strong message of support for Israel, but it also raises questions about the US's approach to international justice and accountability.

🇱🇧 Lebanon
US Embassy Under Fire

Beirut’s morning calm was shattered by gunfire, as a lone gunman took on the might of the US Embassy.

🔘 Shootout: A Syrian national decided to bring horror to Beirut, engaging in a shootout right outside the US Embassy.

  • The Lebanese army was quick on the draw, wounding and capturing the assailant.

  • The embassy guard was injured, but the embassy staff remained unscathed, thanks to the swift action of Lebanese troops and embassy security.

🔘 Tensions: This isn’t just a random act of violence. It’s a symptom of the simmering tensions in Lebanon, where political deadlock and economic hardship have been the daily bread for its citizens.

  • The attacker’s vest, emblazoned with “Islamic State,” hints at a possible motive, but the full story is yet to unfold.

🔘 History Repeats?: The US Embassy in Beirut has seen its share of violence, with a deadly bombing in 1983 and another attack in 1984.

  • Just last year, there was a similar incident, though without casualties.

  • With investigations underway, Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati assures that stability has returned, but the echoes of the past remain loud and clear.
