Tel Aviv Under Fire

Hi Global Recap readers,

Some are calling this the start of World War III. But then again, the last time Iran hit Israel, things didn’t spiral out of control. Still, many believe this time’s different, and for a couple of big reasons:

  • Israel didn’t take out this many top Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists last time.

  • This time, the attacks came around Friday the 13th. 😬

Let’s see how things unfold this weekend now that the 13th is behind us.

🇵🇦 China Joins Panama Deal? Cosco Shipping, China’s state-backed giant, is now in talks to join a stalled $19 billion global ports deal—two in Panama. The original buyers, led by Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte and BlackRock, were racing to close the deal by late July, having already missed April’s deadline. Beijing opposed the initial agreement, fearing it would disrupt trade. But now, with Cosco potentially stepping in, China may be reclaiming its influence—ironically, in a deal originally meant to reduce it.

🇺🇸 Court Allows Troop Deployment. For the first time, active-duty Marines detained a civilian in LA, right outside the Wilshire Federal Building. The man, Army veteran Marcos Leao, was zip-tied after stepping past a restricted line but was quickly handed over to Homeland Security. “They’re just doing their job,” he said, calling the treatment “very fair.” This comes as 200 Marines have now entered LA, and a federal appeals court let Trump keep National Guard troops in the city, overturning a lower court’s ruling, cutting Governor Newsom’s legal victory short after just three hours.

🇲🇽 Mexico Urges ICE Leniency. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wants US immigration forces to back off at Saturday’s Mexico–Dominican Republic soccer match in LA. “We don’t believe that at any soccer match there will be any [immigration] action,” she said, urging ICE to stand down. LA is still under curfew after nearly 400 arrests tied to anti-ICE riots. Homeland Security says those arrested included convicted criminals in the US illegally.

🇮🇳 India Eyes Rare Earths. India, sitting on the world’s third-largest reserves of rare earth elements, wants to break free from China’s grip on the supply chain. Officials are now scrambling to scale up domestic mining and refining as Beijing tightens exports, hitting automakers from the US to Germany. The push could make it a key player alongside the US, but experts say scaling up won’t be quick or easy.

Gaza Celebrating?

This Instagram Reel is making the rounds online, shared by both critics and supporters of Gazans.
