Invasion or Operation or Activities? What is it?

Hi Global Recap readers,

Another major escalation has happened in the Middle East on the weekend. By now, this shouldn’t be surprising.

With Iran mustering the courage to mock the US, and Israel tiptoeing into Gaza after testing the waters, no wonder “WWIII” was trending on X.

🌐 Around the world:

  • Teen Dies After Hijab Assault in Iran.

  • Iran Arrests and Beats Mourners at a Funeral (allegedly).

  • Iran Says to US: Good Riddance.

  • Mob Attacks Jews Arriving in Russia

  • Invasion or Operation or Activities? What is it?

Let’s get into today’s news.

😢 Teen Dies After Hijab Assault

A 16-year-old Iranian girl, Armita Geravand, has died from a coma after being allegedly attacked by morality police for not wearing a headscarf.

Iran has denied the assault and said her injuries were a result of her suffering “low blood pressure,” while human rights activists are calling foul.

We’ve previously covered this heartbreaking controversy in detail in the In-Depth section of our previous email. I highly recommend you check it out for more context. 👉 click here

👮‍♀️ Iran Arrests Human Rights Lawyer

Are you all caught up with the Geravand story? Well here’s what else went down.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, renowned lawyer and activist, was arrested at Armita Geravand’s funeral by Iranian authorities. Sotoudeh was “violently beaten” during the arrest, according to her husband.

But that’s not the end of it. Mourners and protesters were also savagely attacked by Iranian security forces, according to journalists at the scene.

A Tehran-based journalist, whose name is withheld for safety, reported:

“They beat up mourners holding protest placards, I couldn’t get anywhere close to the funeral site.”

Sotoudeh has been jailed several times before for defending women’s rights and opposing the compulsory headscarf.

🇮🇷 Iran Says to US: Good Riddance

On Monday, Iran said the recent attacks by Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria against the US were the result of “wrong American policies.”

These are their words, not mine:

“You reap what you sow”

✡️ Mob Attacks Jewish Travelers

A violent crowd stormed a Dagestan airport, looking for Jewish travelers from Tel Aviv. As a point of reference, Dagestan is a Russian Republic, home to a majority of citizens who practice Islam.

They shouted antisemitic slogans and ran onto the runway. What’s even more outrageous is that this madness was fueled by a local Telegram channel, instructing followers to hunt down every Jew on board.

Israel

Invasion or Operation or Activities? What is it?

🔥 Next Phase. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched the “second phase” of its war against Hamas, aiming to destroy its military and governing capabilities.

🚀 The First Phase. This involves intense airstrikes and artillery shelling, targeting Hamas leaders, infrastructure, and tunnels. The IDF claims to have killed hundreds of militants and destroyed thousands of rocket launchers.

👣 The Second Phase. This phase involves sending troops and tanks into Gaza, but not in a massive D-Day-style assault. Instead, the IDF is moving slowly and cautiously, clearing booby traps and tunnels, and preparing for urban combat. Recently, a female IDF soldier, who was taken hostage by Hamas on October 7, was freed by the Israeli ground forces.

🇮🇱 Israel’s History of Incursion:

October 26: The IDF first announced its incursion into northern Gaza. It reported that it had “since exited the area.”

October 27: The IDF once again reported that its ground troops targeted Hamas targets in Gaza - exiting again, as it did before.

October 28: After testing the waters for two days, Israeli Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi announces that they are “currently operating on the ground in the Gaza Strip.” In other words, they are staying.

🎮 Word Play. Israel is being careful not to label the activities of the IDF Ground Forces in Gaza as a “ground invasion.” This is most likely due to pressure from its allies, who are concerned about the humanitarian issues of the war. But let’s be real - it’s an invasion, albeit not “full-blown.” It technically still is an invasion.

👻 The Mystery. Additionally, the IDF is keeping a tight lid on the details of its ground operation, releasing only brief statements and videos. It is not clear how many soldiers are involved, how far they have penetrated, or what their objectives are. But this recent post by the IDF provides a glimpse into the situation on the ground:

Notice how it still calls its activities “Ground Operations?”

👀 The Future. The IDF says it is ready for a long and difficult war as it strives to retrieve all hostages and dismantle the Hamas regime in the region.
