Uhh... President Biden?
Hi Global Recap readers,
I trust that everyone is prepared to enjoy a relaxing weekend.
Our first story is about a clip of Joe and Jill Biden that I came across on X.
I am a little worried for him and the country…👇
🇫🇷 France
What’s Going On with Biden?
US President Joe Biden was at the shores of Normandy today to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings during WWII.
However, it doesn’t seem like it was all smooth sailing…
Here’s an awkward moment captured on video, featuring the Biden and Macron couples.
I firmly believe that, no matter how much you disagree with the President of your country, it is in everyone’s interest to wish for the best for him/her.
However, as I have been for a while, the above video makes me wonder:
Why Biden is running for a second term?
What is going on with him?
The upcoming debate between Biden and Trump should be interesting.

🇯🇵 Japan
Is Japan shrinking into oblivion?

The demographic challenges faced by Tokyo, and indeed many developed nations, are not limited to national concerns but represent a widespread crisis of declining populations.
🔘 Decline: Japan’s birthrate isn’t just taking a nap; it’s in a freefall. Last year, it saw only 727,277 births, with a fertility rate dropping to a meager 1.20.
To keep the population stable, you need a rate of 2.1, but Japan’s been playing below par for half a century.
🔘 Consequences: This isn’t just about fewer babies; it’s a societal shuffle.
With deaths more than doubling births, Japan’s facing a workforce wane, economic ebb, and a social fabric stretch.
The government’s scrambling with new agencies and initiatives, like child care expansions and housing subsidies, to cushion the blow.
🔘 Innovation: In a bid to spark romance, Tokyo’s playing Cupid with a government-run dating app.
It’s AI-powered matchmaking, hoping to turn singles into duos with a “values diagnostic test.”
Even Elon Musk chimed in, tweeting his support for Japan’s radical action to prevent a demographic disappearance.
🔘 Decline: While Japan is often highlighted in discussions about declining birth rates, there are other countries experiencing the same problem. Take for example, South Korea. Its birth rate is estimated to be around 0.7.

🇵🇱 Poland
Mysterious Fire
Poland’s recent fires and derailments aren’t just random accidents; they’re a smoldering trail of espionage that leads back to Russia.
Is Warsaw getting swept up into a broader war?
🔘 Sabotage: The string of mysterious fires and derailments across Europe, including a major shopping center blaze in Warsaw, points to a chilling pattern of sabotage.
Polish PM Donald Tusk isn’t shy about connecting the dots to Russian espionage.
A warehouse in London, supplying aid to Ukraine, burned down.
An Ikea in Lithuania also fell victim to flames.
A former Russian soldier detonated explosives in his Paris hotel room.
🔘 Proxy Warfare: Russia’s GRU military intelligence, known for its foreign soil espionage operations, is now cozying up with criminal gangs to stir trouble in Europe.
With over 600 Russian intelligence officers discovered and booted post-Ukraine invasion, they’re getting creative.
These gangs lack finesse, raising fears of unintended collateral damage.
Western intelligence is on edge, as these proxies are more likely to fumble with explosives.
🔘 Strategic Strikes: Even military facilities aren’t safe from these clandestine attacks. Arrests in Germany and Poland reveal plots to target NATO sites and disrupt military aid to Ukraine.
Poland’s railways, vital for shipping aid, have also been in the crosshairs.
Unexplained explosions at munitions factories in Wales and Germany deepen the intrigue, echoing a past Russian attack on a Czech arms depot in 2014.

🇮🇱🇵🇸 Israel vs Hamas
Gaza’s Grim Reality

The identities of nine of the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists the IDF says were killed in a strike on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) school on June 5, 2024.
On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) criticized international media for accepting Hamas authorities’ statements without question and suggesting that Israel conducted a deadly airstrike on a UNRWA school, without acknowledging that terrorists were using the Gaza facility.
🔘 Clash: The IDF targeted a UN-run school in Gaza, claiming it housed around 30 terrorists. Media outlets are caught in the crossfire of narratives, reporting civilian casualties without noting the alleged militant presence.
“The terrorists inside this school were planning more attacks against Israelis, some of them imminent. We stopped a ticking time bomb.”
Many international reports on the Wednesday night strike relied on Hamas authorities' claim that 33 Palestinians were killed, with little or no mention of any alleged connections to terrorist activity.
🔘 Notice: I’ve been hesitant for some time to provide specific figures on casualties in this conflict. During warfare, such statistics are frequently obscured and untrustworthy. This is particularly true for numbers from Gaza, which are sourced from the Gaza Health Ministry under Hamas control. However, in yesterday’s reporting, I didn’t explicitly mention that those numbers were sourced from Gaza’s local sources, but the article did. Henceforth, regarding this war, I will make sure to be explicit.

🇮🇱🇵🇸 Israel vs Hamas
Gaza Ceasefire Stalemate

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu (left) and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Israel and Hamas are locked in a stalemate, each holding their ground in the ceasefire deal.
Will they find common ground, or is this another mirage in the peace process?
🔘 Negotiations: The tug-of-war continues with Hamas rejecting Israel’s latest truce proposal.
The demands? According to the Wall Street Journal, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar told Arab mediators that the group demands a permanent ceasefire and would not disarm at all.
Israel is demanding a scheduled ceasefire, security guarantees, and a hostage exchange.
Talks are ongoing, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, but the horizon of agreement remains distant.
🔘 Stance: Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’ leader, remains adamant.
“Hamas will not surrender its guns or sign a proposal that asks for that.”
