🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM
Grooming Gangs Scandal Uncovered

The UK is reeling from revelations of British-Pakistani grooming gangs targeting children, with accusations that authorities covered up the abuse to preserve a “facade of multicultural harmony.”
This has led many, including Elon Musk, to question the integrity of institutions meant to protect the vulnerable.
Context
This scandal is dubbed the Oldham child grooming scandal.
Men of mostly Pakistani heritage targeted young and vulnerable white girls.
This went on for years, covered up or brushed aside.
Why?
Authorities often turned a blind eye for fear of being labeled “racist or Islamophobic.”
Rotherham's police and council feared race riots if abuse by Pakistani men was exposed.
But what’s worse is: fathers rescuing daughters from abuse were arrested. And even some victims were sometimes arrested for “drunk and disorderly” behavior instead of their abusers.
Heartbreaking Stories
The abuse stories are devastating. This is incredibly distressing to read and just as disgusting to write about. Please be advised.
Mohammed Karrar's victim in Oxford was gang-raped by multiple men.
“Anna” from Bradford was married off to her abuser at 14, with her social worker attending the wedding.
As the 2014 Jay Inquiry into Rotherham found, children were “doused in petrol and threatened with being set alight,” “threatened with guns,” “witnessed brutally violent rapes and were warned they’d be the next victim if they spoke out.” Girls as young as 11 were raped by large numbers of male perpetrators, one after the other.
There are more disturbing details in the article above. If you’d like to read more, please check out the Telegraph article linked above.
Starmer's Involvement
Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, is facing criticism for his role in the grooming gangs scandal. But why?
Starmer was the director of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008-2013, during which time the scandal unfolded.
Critics, including Elon Musk, have accused Starmer of failing to tackle the issue effectively.
The Cover-Up
What infuriates critics is that Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips blocked a public inquiry into the Oldham grooming gangs, despite public outcry.
Some argue this is the Labour party protecting their own—the Prime Minister.
Although a review of the abuse in Oldham was conducted, it only covered cases from 2011 to 2014, missing earlier ones.
Musk even called the safeguarding minister “rape genocide apologist.”

Starmer’s Response
But what was Starmer’s much awaited response?
He emphasized that child sexual exploitation is “utterly sickening.”
Starmer accused Musk of spreading “lies and misinformation.”
He also claimed that those seeking full inquiry into the scandal are “jumping on the bandwagon of the far-right.”
Starmer also pointed to his record as director of public prosecutions, highlighting his efforts to reform the system.

🇬🇱 GREENLAND
Independence from Denmark?

Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede is pushing for independence from Denmark.
This move is being dubbed the “Donald Trump effect,” as the US President-elect's comments have reignited the debate over Greenland's sovereignty.
Things are getting interesting. Critics hammered Trump for suggesting Greenland could join the US, but now, Greenland’s PM wants to break away from Denmark? What’s going on?
A Bold Declaration
Egede's New Year’s speech emphasized Greenland's desire to break free from Denmark's “shackles of colonialism.”
Greenland has been self-governing since 1979.
Egede wants Greenland to determine its own future.
Trump's interest in Greenland has fueled this push for independence.
Trump's Influence
Trump's repeated interest in acquiring Greenland has shifted political rhetoric on the island.
Trump stated that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security.
Egede used Trump's comments to rally support for independence.
Egede firmly stated that “Greenland is not for sale and will never be for sale.”
Referendum on the Horizon?
Egede suggested that a referendum on independence could coincide with parliamentary elections in April 2025.
Discussions around sovereignty are gaining momentum.
Work is underway to establish the framework for an independent Greenland.
The Independence Movement
Greenland, the world's largest island, has a population of around 57,000 and has long held the right to declare independence.
A 2009 referendum established this right.
Egede's comments signal a renewed urgency for independence.
Cooperation with Denmark has not achieved full equality.
Strategic Importance
Greenland's strategic location and resources make it a key player in Arctic sovereignty.
The island's economy relies on fishing, mineral resources, and subsidies from Denmark.
The Arctic region is a new frontier for shipping routes, natural resources, and military strategy.
Greenland's push for independence is gaining traction, and the world is watching closely as this story unfolds.
Danish King’s Response

The old design (left) and the new design (right)
King Frederik of Denmark shocked historians by changing the royal coat of arms to highlight Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Yikes…
A Bold Move
King Frederik's new coat of arms prominently features a polar bear and a ram, representing Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
The three crowns, representing the Kalmar Union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, have been removed. This is considered a significant historical shift.
The change emphasizes Denmark's intent to keep these territories.
Historical Significance
This is the fourth time the royal arms have been changed since 1819.
Previous changes occurred in 1903, 1948, and 1972.

🇨🇦 CANADA
Trudeau Resigns
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has thrown in the towel after nearly a decade in office.
Facing mounting calls to step down and internal party battles, Trudeau announced his resignation, marking the end of an era.
Trudeau's Announcement
Trudeau, 53, announced his resignation on January 6, 2025, citing internal battles within his party.
He plans to stay in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader.
Trudeau emphasized his love for Canada and the need for a real choice in the next election.
Polling Woes
Trudeau's popularity has plummeted due to various issues, including spending and the soaring cost of living.
Grim polling numbers show Trudeau's party would lose badly to the Conservative Party.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to take advantage of Trudeau's unpopularity.
Calls for his resignation intensified after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland quit last month.
Freeland accused Trudeau of focusing on “political gimmicks” rather than Canada's economy.
Parliament Suspended
Canada's Parliament, set to resume on January 27, will now be suspended until March 24.
This suspension allows the Liberal Party to hold a leadership race.
Trudeau has asked the party president to begin the process of selecting a new leader.
The next election must be held by late October.
More Trump Effect?
Donald Trump's presidency and threats of US tariffs on Canadian products have added to Trudeau's headache.
Trump has consistently needled Trudeau since winning the US election.
The threat of 25% tariffs looms large if Canada doesn't address border issues.
Trump even joked about making Trudeau the governor of Canada, the 51st state of the US.
Soon after the resignation, President Trump took to Truth Social, calling for Canada to join the United States as the 51st state.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES
Trump's 2024 Win Certified
Kamala Harris has officially certified Donald Trump's 2024 presidential win during a joint session of Congress.
This is the final step before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025.
📝 Fun fact: On January 6, 2001, exactly 20 years ago, Vice President Al Gore presided over the certification of George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election. Bush was his opponent in the presidential race.
The Certification Process
The certification process was a stark contrast to the infamous Jan. 6 riot of four years ago.
Tellers for the Senate's vote counting were Sens. Deb Fischer and Amy Klobuchar.
House tellers were Reps. Bryan Steil and Joe Morelle.
Trump received 312 electoral college votes, while Harris received 226. 270 is needed for presidency.
Harris' Role
Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the certification of her own defeat.
Harris emphasized the importance of the peaceful transfer of power.
She recorded a video message highlighting this fundamental principle of American democracy.

🇺🇦 UKRAINE
Lex Interviews
President Zelenskyy
A well-known podcaster, Lex Fridman, interviewed the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy for over 3 hours.
However, there’s much discussion online about this interview because of the following:
Language
Lex spoke in Russian instead of the usual English, claiming it would help people better understand Zelenskyy’s character, as Zelenskyy also speaks Russian.
The problem is, people argue this is insensitive—getting the head of a sovereign nation to speak another language is typically avoided. On top of that, it’s the language of the nation invading his country.
President Zelenskyy explains his reason for avoiding Russian at the start of the interview.
The video is dubbed in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. So, people are asking: if the interview is already dubbed and translated live on the spot for Lex to understand the President’s Ukrainian, why was Lex so adamant about speaking in Russian?
Naiveté
Critics also argue that Lex’s frequent comments about hoping for love and peace are tone-deaf and naive. Such comments often came after the President’s long and detailed explanation of his thoughts and reasoning.
Insightful
However, many comments expressed pleasant surprise, as viewers who began with disdain for Zelenskyy ended up seeing a more sympathetic side of him and discovering he’s far more knowledgeable about the complexities of the issues he faces.
What do you think? Was it just me, or did President Zelenskyy seem to get progressively frustrated with Lex?
