UK Terrorist Attack

Hi Global Recap readers,

Despite a terrorist attack in the UK today, I didn’t come across a single post about it on social media.

  • Normally, my phone would be buzzing with notifications or it would show up in trending, but nothing.

  • Maybe it just went over my head, I don’t know, but I had to dig to find details. Strange.

Is it just my social media algorithm? 👇️

🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM
Manchester Synagogue Attack

Two men were killed and several others injured when a British citizen of Syrian descent attacked worshippers at a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur. Police shot the suspect dead at the scene.

  • Method: The terrorist, identified as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, drove a car into pedestrians before stabbing a security guard outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.

  • Response: Armed officers confronted him within minutes, shouting warnings before firing when he appeared to wear an explosive vest, which was later confirmed to be non-viable.

  • Casualties: Two men died, three others remain in serious condition, and dozens of elderly congregants and children were evacuated in shock.

  • Security: PM Keir Starmer cut short a European summit to chair an emergency meeting, deploying more police to synagogues across Britain.

  • Reaction: - Critics online blame Starmer, citing his recent recognition of a Palestinian state, while others argue the attack is unrelated.

📌 Context: Antisemitic incidents in Britain hit record highs after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, with over 3,500 incidents logged in 2024. Jewish leaders had warned that an attack on a synagogue was only a matter of time.

🇻🇪 VENEZUELA
Venezuela Accuses US Incursion

Venezuelan President Maduro (left) and US President Trump (right)

Venezuela accused Washington of an incursion after US fighter planes flew within 75km (46 miles) of its Caribbean coastline, calling it a direct threat to national sovereignty.

  • Accusation: Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez labeled the flights "military harassment and threat" in a televised address on Thursday.

  • Deployment: Last month, President Donald Trump sent 10 F-35s to Puerto Rico, along with eight warships and a nuclear submarine, marking the largest US military buildup in the Caribbean in over 30 years.

  • Clashes: US forces have attacked several Venezuelan vessels in recent weeks, leaving at least 14 alleged smugglers dead, while linking them to drug trafficking. President Nicolas Maduro rejects this claim.

  • Diplomacy: Despite the tension, Maduro has floated talks with US envoy Richard Grenell, even as he accuses Washington of plotting regime change.

🇷🇺 RUSSIA
Putin Threatens
Nuclear Power Plants

Vladimir Putin just threatened to strike Ukraine's nuclear power plants during a speech in Sochi on October 2, framing it as a "mirror response" to alleged Ukrainian attacks near the occupied Zaporizhzhia facility.

  • Claim: Putin accused Ukraine of targeting areas around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, a Ukrainian facility Russia has been controlling since March 2022. However, Putin offered no evidence.

  • Warning: Today, at the Valdai International Discussion Club in the city of Sochi, he said:

"(People in Ukrainian-controlled territories) need to understand that if they keep playing with this dangerously, they still have operating nuclear power plants on their side. So what is stopping us from responding in kind? They should think about that."

  • Crisis: The Zaporizhzhia plant has been disconnected from Ukraine's grid for over a week, relying on diesel generators, one of which has already failed.

  • Response: Ukrainian President Zelenskyy called the situation "critical," while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia deliberately cut power to prepare for reconnecting the plant to its own system.

  • History: Russian drones have previously struck nuclear-related sites, including a February hit on the Chornobyl containment structure, though no radiation leaks occurred.

📌 Context: Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, nuclear facilities have become flashpoints, with Ukraine demanding a demilitarized zone around Zaporizhzhia that Moscow has repeatedly rejected.

🇩🇪 GERMANY
FDrones Halt Munich Flights

Munich Airport abruptly halted operations Thursday night after drones appeared in its airspace, forcing controllers to shut everything down.

  • Impact: Officials canceled 17 flights outright, leaving nearly 3,000 passengers stranded or scrambling for alternatives.

  • Diversions: Another 15 incoming flights were rerouted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt, creating a ripple of delays across central Europe.

  • Pattern: Just last week, airports in Denmark and Norway also closed temporarily after drone sightings.

📌 Context: European airports have faced repeated drone incursions since 2018, when Gatwick in the UK shut down for 36 hours, exposing how a single unmanned aircraft can paralyze major hubs.

🇵🇸🇮🇱 HAMAS & ISRAEL
Gazans Urge
While Hamas
Rejects

Palestinians in Gaza are pressing Hamas to accept a US-brokered ceasefire plan that could halt nearly two years of war and civilian devastation.

  • Proposal: President Trump unveiled the plan on Sept. 29, 2025, alongside Israeli PM Netanyahu at the White House. It demands Hamas release all remaining hostages within 72 hours in exchange for Israel freeing about 1,950 Palestinian prisoners.

  • Terms: The deal requires Hamas to disarm, relinquish political control in Gaza, and accept a transitional government overseen by foreign officials, including Trump and former UK PM Tony Blair.

  • Voices: Residents like Mahmoud Bolbol, a construction worker in Gaza City, said, "Hamas must say yes to this offer, we have been through hell already." Others expressed doubt that Hamas would prioritize civilians over its own survival.

  • Rejection: And just as many feared, Hamas has officially rejected the deal, leaving families trapped between Israeli bombardment and the group’s refusal to compromise. However, there are also reports that Hamas will demand revisions to it.

Be on the lookout for this in the coming days.
