Why Suddenly Shift?

Hi Global Recap readers,

Lately, there’s been a flood of stories about refugees and immigrants.

  • Some chalk it up to the "Trump effect," claiming that Trump’s rise has emboldened many to voice their frustration about rising immigration.

  • Others argue it’s the result of years of lenient border policies and multicultural experiments that are only now revealing their downsides.

Either way, it was a wild weekend for migrant news around the world. 👇️

🇦🇺 Allies Launch Massive Drill. Australia just kicked off its biggest-ever war games Exercise Talisman Sabre with 35,000 troops from 19 countries, including the US, Japan, South Korea, and the UK.

  • This comes as the Pentagon has been pressing its allies to spell out exactly what they'd do if a war breaks out with China over Taiwan.

  • For the first time, some drills will spill into Papua New Guinea, as Malaysia and Vietnam look on.

  • China’s spy ships have tracked these exercises since 2017, and officials expect surveillance to ramp up again.

  • Meanwhile, PM Albanese touched down in China for talks with Xi but said he won’t bring up China’s surveillance of the drills.

🇺🇦 Ukraine Kills Russian Agents. Ukraine’s security service said it tracked down and killed two Russian operatives suspected of assassinating SBU officer Ivan Voronych on July 10 in Kyiv.

  • The pair had allegedly been ordered by Russia’s FSB to follow him, then retrieve a silenced pistol from a safe house.

  • During the arrest, gunfire broke out and both suspects were shot dead.

  • SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk warned Russia that its agents face “only death” inside Ukraine.

  • This comes as Russia escalates attacks, with the week’s two biggest drone strikes of the war so far.

  • Bystanders jumped in, tackled the suspect, and held him down until police arrived, while he kept yelling “Allahu Akbar.”

  • The victim’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening, according to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

  • This comes just days after a machete-wielding man was shot in Sydney and months after Victoria banned machetes following the Bondi Junction stabbings.

  • Although police said the incident is not being treated as terrorism, critics are questioning the motive behind the shouted phrase.

🇫🇷 France Grants Gaza Refuge. France’s top asylum court just ruled that Gazans fleeing Israeli military action can get refugee status, even if they’re not covered by the UN.

  • The court cites “indiscriminate violence” since the March 2025 ceasefire collapse.

  • The case started with a Gazan mom and her son, who got out via the French embassy in Cairo and became the first from Gaza to win this protection.

  • France still doesn’t recognize Palestine as a state, but the court said these two count as a “nationality” at risk.

  • If Israel does go through with a forced evacuation of Gaza, as some reports suggest, could that push Palestinians to head for France—especially now that this ruling may have set a new precedent?

Trump’s Ukraine
Shift Plan

Trump just unveiled his plan to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, and it seems like it's a win-win for both sides:

  • those tired of pouring billions into foreign aid,

  • those who still want the US to help Ukraine push back against Russia.

But what about the sanctions Ukraine’s been pushing for all this time?

The Weapon Deal

Patriot Anti-Missile System Launchers

Let's start with Trump's plan. It involves NATO countries buying a wide range of US weapons and sending them to Ukraine. That includes the highly coveted Patriot missile systems.

  • Trump even suggested that 17 "spare" Patriot units are available in one NATO country.

  • Only the White House can greenlight the sale and transfer of such advanced systems, and now it has.

Why It Matters Now

But why now, and why this? Because Ukraine’s air defense is hanging by a thread.

  • Russian ballistic missiles continue pounding Ukrainian cities nightly. And if our recent reports called some of those strikes the “largest ever,” that wasn’t an exaggeration. It’s just that Russia keeps breaking its own records with each new wave.

  • Patriots are “the only” tech that can reliably stop these attacks, and Ukraine was running short.

  • This gives Kyiv vital, short-term relief, but unfortunately, doesn't change the bigger dynamics.

Missing Sanctions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

That’s where the disappointment kicks in. Trump held back from slapping secondary sanctions on buyers of Russian energy, something President Zelenskyy has been calling for.

  • A Senate bill initially proposed tariffs of up to “500%” on trade with anyone buying Russian hydrocarbons.

  • The move would’ve seriously hurt China and India (two countries heavily reliant on Russian oil).

  • Instead, Trump has just floated a plan to slap sky-high tariffs—around 100 percent—if the war in Ukraine isn’t settled within 50 days.

  • It's not exactly the sanctions Kyiv’s been asking for, but it’s a pressure tactic aimed at forcing movement fast.

Putin’s Breathing Room

Russian President Vladimir Putin

This delay also gives Russia time to maneuver, which is a double-edged sword.

  • The Kremlin could use this to either push harder militarily or seek a tactical ceasefire.

  • A lot of people are betting on the first scenario.

    • Based on Trump’s track record, his past “deadlines” have often just bought Putin more time to regroup, ship in logistics, and pull in troops and gear from places like North Korea.

  • Trump’s countdown expires in September, just as rumors swirl about Putin launching a new offensive.

China–India Factor

Still, could the delay push China or India to step in just to dodge secondary sanctions? Don’t count on it.

  • Both countries rely heavily on Russian oil and gas, so cutting ties is “complex” and unlikely.

  • Analysts believe that China simply cannot afford to see Moscow lose.

    • Western sanctions have squeezed Russia’s oil exports, giving Beijing an opening for discounted deals.

    • China reportedly saved around $10 billion in 2023 by importing cut-rate crude from sanctioned suppliers like Russia and Iran.

    • In fact, China alone bought 47% of Russia’s crude exports by volume in mid-2024.

Theories

There’s been a noticeable shift in Trump’s tone lately when it comes to sending weapons to Ukraine, and naturally, the internet has theories.

Here are some theories:

NATO Chief Mark Rutte (left) referring to Trump as “Daddy.”

  • Do you remember Mark Rutte recently alluding to Trump as “daddy” at the NATO summit? Some believe that Rutte is just sucking up to Trump.

Truth Social recently updated its system so that only registered users can view posts. To make things easier, I’ve included the full post so you don’t have to create an account. Apologies for the length.

  • Trump is trying to distract people from the Epstein file controversy.

    • Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving 20 years in prison on child sex trafficking charges, recently told the Daily Mail that she would “welcome the chance to sit in front of Congress and tell her story.” This is believed to mean she is willing to reveal the client list, which US authorities claim does not exist.

    • Even though plenty of Trump supporters claim he’s being used by so-called “Deep State” bureaucrats to shield Epstein’s clients, Trump himself recently went on Truth Social with a long post telling everyone to drop the Epstein talk. He brushed it off as a distraction and blamed the whole “list” narrative on the Democrats.
