WWII Bomb Detonated

Hi Global Recap readers,

Today’s theme? Twists & turns.

Brace yourself, as things are not always as they seem.

🌐 Around the world:

  • WWII bomb detonated.

  • Rape is horrific, but…

  • Zelensky is lying?

  • Another Russian general dies, but not in the way you think.

  • UK’s new plan to shut out migrants.

Let’s get into today’s news.

🌊 WWII Bomb Detonated

A Danish fisherman got more than he bargained for when he caught a WWII bomb in his net. The navy had to detonate the 130kg explosive in the water near Langeland Island.

  • Old Threat: The bomb was likely dropped by Allied planes during the war. Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945. Unexploded bombs are still found from time to time in the country.

🤦‍♀️ Rape Is Horrific, But…

A CNN anchor grilled a Democratic congresswoman on her silence about Hamas’s use of rape as a weapon of war against Israeli women.

The congresswoman tried to shift away from the topic to criticize Israel’s alleged humanitarian crimes, but the CNN anchor quickly shifted back.

  • White House Response: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made the Biden administration’s stance clear, saying that President Biden finds the use of rape as a weapon of war “reprehensible.”

  • Hierarchy of Oppressions: Rep. Pramila Jayapal refused to acknowledge the difference between Israeli soldiers and Hamas terrorists, saying she didn’t want to create a “hierarchy of oppressions.”

Watch the exchange for yourselves. Is the congresswoman in the wrong, or are critics being too harsh on her?

🇺🇦 Zelensky is Lying?

In a Swiss newspaper interview, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko accused Ukrainian President Zelensky of lying about how the war is going with Russia.

The mayor said he supported the military chief who called the conflict a “stalemate” and criticized Zelensky for rejecting this assessment.

🇷🇺 Another Russian General Dies

A Russian Major General was killed in Ukraine, but not by the enemy. He stepped on a friendly mine in the rear area.

  • Name: Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps of the Northern Fleet.

  • Death: He died at the end of last month, but his death was announced recently by Russian officials and his alma mater.

  • Toll: He is the 12th high-ranking Russian general to die in Ukraine and the 7th confirmed by Russia.

How the UK is Shutting Out Migrants

🇬🇧 UK’s New Visa Rules. Britain is cracking down on legal migration, raising the minimum salary for skilled workers, and limiting family visas.

🔥 Sunak’s Radical Action. On Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the country was taking “radical action” to bring down immigration, which hit a record high of 745,000 last year. Many of these migrants are coming from faraway nations like China, Nigeria, and India.

At the same time, Sunak is facing a roadblock from the UK Supreme Court in his efforts to deport illegal migrants from Rwanda.

🏠 Home Secretary. Home Secretary James Cleverly forecasts a massive 300,000 migrant plunge with new measures. He also spotlights the predicament of British workers, edged out by cheaper migrant labor.

"We will stop immigration undercutting the salary of British workers.”

UK Home Secretary James Cleverly.

💰 Higher Salary Threshold. One of the main changes is raising the minimum salary threshold for foreign skilled workers from £26,200 ($33,073) to £38,700 ($48,852). This means that migrants will have to earn quite a bit more to qualify for a work visa.

However, health and social workers will be exempt from this requirement.

👪 Fewer Family Visas. Another change is stopping foreign health workers from bringing in family members on their visas. The government also increased the surcharge migrants have to pay to use the health service by 66% and raised the minimum income for family visas.

👎 Business and Unions Slam the Plan. The new rules have been met with criticism from both employers and trade unions, who say they will worsen the labor shortages in many sectors.

  • The Home Secretary says, now, employers can no longer pay migrants just 80% of the standard rate for shortage jobs.

  • However, critics say this is artificially toying with the free market. They also say the rules are unfair and will deter skilled migrants from coming to Britain - favoring more welcoming countries.

☀️ Sunak’s Motives. The move is seen as an attempt by Sunak to appease his Conservative Party and the voters who backed Brexit in 2016. Sunak has promised to gain more control over immigration after being accused of failing to tackle record net migration figures. He is also facing an election next year, with the opposition Labour Party far ahead in the polls.

Plus, this is the perfect time to do it, as Europe has recently suffered from Islamist terror attacks. The most recent one being the stabbing attack in France.
