“This Madness Must Be Stopped.” Scientists React to China’s New COVID-19 Upgrade.
Hi Global Recap readers,
Today, I’ve prepared reactions from the scientific community on China’s brewing and trialing of a deadly new coronavirus strain.
Here’s a sneak peek: pointless, reckless.
Just imagine another pandemic, with enforced distancing and mask mandates. Global disputes would be the last thing on world leaders’ plates.

PTSD: Activated.
🌐 Around the world:
⚠️ NATO: We need to prepare.
🔥 Navy SEALs missing after sea raid.
🇮🇷 Iran strikes Pakistan
🇫🇷 Macron’s big plans.
🇨🇳 “This madness must be stopped.” Scientists react to China’s new COVID-19 upgrade.
Let’s get into today’s news.

⚠️ NATO: We Need to Prepare

NATO Military Committee Chair, Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer.
NATO’s top military official urged the West to prepare for an era of unpredictable warfare, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to escalate.
He said:
"We need a warfighting transformation of NATO”
Being ready for any conflict is smart and essential, but do you remember our discussion yesterday about global leaders gearing up for war?
Concerning.

🔥 SEALs Missing After Sea Raid

Two Navy SEALs are still missing after an operation to seize Iranian weapons from a boat off Somalia.
Why: The mission was part of a series of actions to stop the flow of arms to the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Raid: The SEALs boarded a dhow at night with the help of helicopters and drones and captured missile parts and warheads.
Fall: One of the SEALs fell into the water while climbing a ladder and another jumped in to rescue him.
Search: The US military is conducting an exhaustive search for the missing teammates, but the chances of survival are slim. They are now presumed dead.
A former Special Forces soldier said that boarding a moving boat from the water or the air is one of the most difficult and risky missions for special forces.

🇮🇷 Iran Strikes Pakistan

Iran launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan, killing two children and injuring three others.
Iran says it was targeting Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group that operates in the area.
Escalation: This is the first time Iran has used missiles and drones to strike inside Pakistan’s territory.
Tension: The attack could worsen the already strained relations between the two neighboring countries, both of which have nuclear capabilities.
Context: The attack comes amid a series of Iranian strikes on Syria and Iraq, as well as the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

🇫🇷 Macron’s Big Plans

President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
French President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled his ambitious agenda for 2024, hoping to boost his popularity and legacy.
He announced that he will deliver more weapons to Ukraine, work with Trump if he wins again, and strengthen France’s role in the world.
Ukraine: Macron plans to send 40 long-range missiles and several hundred bombs to help Kyiv resist Russian aggression.
Trump: Macron said he is ready to talk to anyone when France’s interests are at stake, but also warned that Europe should not depend on the US.

Alright, let’s revisit the tale of scientists, mentored by the Chinese military, who have engineered and examined a novel and lethal strain of coronavirus.
Oh, first time reading about it?
Here’s a quick summary, but if you’d like to read our previous story about it, click here.
🔬 The Deadly Experiment. Chinese scientists have been experimenting with a new coronavirus strain, GX_P2V, which has shown a 100% fatality rate in “humanized mice.”
These mice have been genetically engineered to mimic human characteristics, enabling scientists to more accurately assess the potential impacts of their experiment on humans.
The infected mice died within eight days, exhibiting rapid weight loss, sluggish movement, and eerily white eyes before eventually dying.
🚨 The Warning. Experts have raised concerns about this study, calling it “reckless” and “scientifically totally pointless”.
I had a look at the preprint. It's a terrible study, scientifically totally pointless. I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting a weird breed of humanised mice with a random virus. Conversely, I could see how such stuff might go wrong ...

Dr. Francois Balloux, a specialist in epidemiology at the University College London’s Genetics Institute, expressed criticism of the study due to its insufficient details about biosafety measures.
He cautioned that experiments of this nature could potentially trigger another pandemic.
👥 The Concerned Voices. Dr. Richard H. Ebright, a Chemistry and Chemical Biology Professor at Ruger’s University, along with Dr. Gennadi Glinsky, a retired Medicine Professor from Stanford, backed Balloux’s apprehensions.
Here are their reactions:
Ebright: "The preprint does not specify the biosafety level…The absence of this information raises…possibility…this research, like the research in Wuhan…that likely caused…Covid…, was performed without…biosafety…essential for research with a potential pandemic pathogen."

This is exactly the problem. For humanity to survive, this madness must be stopped. There are more than enough viruses that already infect humans. Plenty of work to make those viruses less virulent. Stop making new viruses capable of infecting humans or making them more deadly.

They called upon the scientific community to halt such experiments before the situation becomes irreversible.
💀 The Unprecedented Mortality Rate. The study is the first of its kind to report a 100% mortality rate in mice infected by the coronavirus virus, surpassing previous results from separate studies. However, it remains unclear how this strain will impact humans.
📻 Tune In. Tomorrow, we have another story about a recent finding that implicates China’s shady connections to COVID-19.
